Illinois 9, Central Michigan 4

A few dozen evaluators from various MLB organizations (including crosscheckers and directors) settled into Melching Field on Friday afternoon to take in the Illinois-Central Michigan contest, the first game of the Stetson Invitational.

The matinee featured a pair of intriguing draft prospects on the mound, with Illinois’ Cody Sedlock and Central Michigan’s Nick Deeg the main attractions for the scouts in attendance.

Sedlock in particular has generated lots of interest in the last eight months or so, as the righty showed off some bat-missing ability this summer while pitching for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League. Coming into the season the 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior had worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen, but he’s made the transition to the Friday-night ace role rather seamlessly, entering Friday’s start with a 1-0 record, 2.38 ERA, and 14 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched in two starts this season.
