Friday Recaps: Raiders, Frogs win in Houston

No. 23 Texas Tech 5, No. 8 Louisiana 3 (10 innings)

The first game of the Saturday triple-header at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Houston College Classic was an exciting, extra-inning affair.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders were able to edge the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns Tough, hard-fought game 5-3 in 10 innings thanks to some clutch hitting.

Louisiana starting pitcher Wyatt Marks threw the ball well and was effective for the length of his outing (5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K). However, he did run into some trouble in the sixth and had to be relieved before finishing the frame.

Marks, a 6-foot-3, 205 pound righty has a nice large, projectable frame and athletic pitchers build. He has good rhythm to his delivery and works to a high ¾ arm slot. In the early going Marks was living down in the strike zone with his 88-91 mph fastball, showing more comfort in working to his armside than anywhere else. However, he eventually began to establish his fastball to the gloveside, showing a solid ability to move his heater from side to side while still generating some armside run and mild sink. He also showed good feel and command for his slider which was clocked up into the low-80s in the early innings before settling into the 78-79 mph range. Marks displayed an astute ability to play with the depth and shape of the offering, with some showing more 12/6 break and others having more horizontal slice and finish. Finally, Marks also worked in some quality changeups in the low-80s, using the offering mainly against lefthanded hitters. His fastball-slider combination was the true bread-and-butter on Saturday, and with his feel, command, confidence, and ability to sequence it should give him and his team a chance to win every time he takes the mound. While he may not be a big-name prospect, Marks should definitely receive some interest from professional organizations in the middle rounds of the draft this summer.
