Friday Recaps: Caravelle Resort Tournament | Florida/Florida Gulf Coast | Friday Recap

No. 1 Florida 8, Florida Gulf Coast 4

The Florida Gators moved to 2-0 on the season after coming from behind to secure an 8-4 victory over visiting Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday evening.

Saturday’s contest was similar to the season opener on Friday in a few regards, as it was a tightly contested game with Florida Gulf Coast certainly testing the top-ranked Gators and making them earn a hard-fought victory.

It was also similar in that there were plenty of scouts on hand to watch a high-end pitching prospect, as Florida’s A.J. Puk, Perfect Game’s top-rated college prospect in the 2016 class toed the rubber.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound southpaw has always had big-time talent, and he really came on towards the end of last season, flashing a fastball in the upper-90s and providing some dominating pitching performances late in conference play.

On Saturday Puk did not show quite the same velocity as he had for parts of last season, working predominately in the 92-94 mph range with his fastball in the early going. With it being so early in the season, it is not uncommon for pitchers to be feeling their way into things, so one would be wise to not read too much into apparent velocity dip at such an early phase.
