Perfect Game College Baseball on SiriusXM College SportsWeekend Preview | Staff Predictions

No. 9 Virginia 8, Kent State 6

Opening weekend in college baseball is a date that’s undoubtedly circled on everybody’s calendar that’s involved within the game. For Virginia it not only marked the beginning of the 2016 season but a chance to repeat as National Champions. The Cavaliers' first game of the year was a particularly interesting ones for scouts as it pitted ace righthander Connor Jones against Kent State’s highly touted lefthander Eric Lauer. Not only did it form perhaps the best matchup of the weekend, but it afforded those previously mentioned scouts and cross-checkers an opportunity to get early looks at two potential first round arms.

Connor Jones is no stranger to pitching on the big stage, and he also isn't new to finding success on the mound as Friday proved to be just business as usual for the 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior righthander. With a strong, durable build that’s proven to be capable of handling 100-plus innings a season, Jones will be more than vital to the Cavs pitching staff and overall success. Friday's performance was what we have come to expect out of Jones but he was still impressive (especially considering the fact it was the first game of the year) as he scattered just three hits over seven innings, walked none and punched out eight, a couple of which came looking. Perhaps the most impressive stat from Jones’ final line was his ability to work that effectively yet still be more than efficient, needing just 84 pitches to twirl seven innings.
