No matter the year, the Major League Baseball draft is always filled with some sort of drama during the final few days and hours leading up to the signing deadline, which by the way, comes Friday, July 18, at 4 p.m., central.
This year is no exception from a drama standpoint. As the days go by, the Houston Astros still don't have an official deal with No. 1 overall pick, UCLA signee and former Perfect Game All-American lefthanded pitcher Brady Aiken. Aiken, or the Astros' decision, could have ramifications on other drafted prospects, including fellow UCLA signee and righthanded pitcher Jacob Nix, the Astros' fifth round selection, or perhaps even LSU signee Mac Marshall, an Astros 21st-round selection who has been steadfast in his commitment to play college baseball for the Tigers. Could a shakeup with Aiken suddenly allow the Astros to give Marshall an offer he won't refuse? It would be a surprise if Marshall reneged on his commitment to LSU, but never say never when we're talking about the draft.
There are some interesting decisions brewing for some notable college players as well. Florida International catcher Aramis Garcia, a Giants second-round pick, agreed to terms with the organization for $1.1 million Tuesday morning, but plenty of other notable names are still on the board. Another slight change from our initial list Tuesday morning is Oregon State outfielder Dylan Davis. Davis was on our initial unsigned list, but has since agreed to terms with the Giants.
Other notable unsigned college players include Sean Newcomb (1), Erick Fedde (1), Andrew Suarez (2), Trevor Megill (3), Zack Zehner (7) and Austin Slater (8). Megill and Zehner already have announced they're returning to Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly, respectively.
