The PG World Wood Bat Championship JUPITER REPORT #1

Look for new information and stories each week for the next 3 months before and after the tournament.

New Team Receives Automatic Bid.

Seldom has a new team received an automatic bid to the WWBA Championship without playing in a qualifier. There will be an exception to that rule this year. T

he Atlanta Braves will enter a National Scout Team in this year's event. Perfect Game's goal has always been to get as many of the nation's top prospects to play in the the WWBA Championship. Each year this tournament is the number one scouting attraction in baseball. Over 600 scouts and college coaches attend every year.

Last year the tournament was moved to Ft. Myers because of the hurricane that went through the Jupiter area. The Houston Heat defeated the Ohio Warhawks in the championship game. Roger Clemens and his family were on hand to watch his son Koby help the Heat win it all. The Ohio Warhawks and Houston Heat are entered again this year. They will join past champion Baseball America, East Cobb and Miami as pre-tournament favorites. Many other traditional powerhouse programs will be in the hunt.

A very large number of first round selections have played in the tournament. Many first surfaced on the national scene at this event. The past 3 first overall selections in the June draft have all played in Jupiter. 2003 first pick Delmon Young played 3 years with Baseball America who has won two titles. 2004 first pick Matt Bush also played on one of the Baseball America Championship clubs. This year's first pick Justin Upton played 3 years with Mike Manning's All Star Baseball Academy. Justin's older brother BJ, who was the first high school player picked (2nd overall) in 2002, also played with All Star Academy as did the 2nd high school player picked in 2003, Chris Lubanski. More on past teams and players later.

Back to the Braves Scout Team-- They will be coached by the Atlanta Braves Scouting Department and they will be one of the favorites to take home the rings. They have started to load up with several of America's top prospects from California, Florida, Texas and the rest of the country. It is very likely the Braves Scout Team could have the best club on paper, but there will be much competition. Interesting is the fact that the Atlanta Braves are one of the clubs who draft mostly high school players.

The White Sox, Twins, Marlins, D'Rays, D'Backs, Yankees, Red Sox, and other MLB clubs have entered scout teams before. In fact, several will have scout teams in Jupiter this year. The unique thing about the Braves Scout Team is they will be the first National Scout Team to enter. The others are all regionally based teams.

We will have much more coming soon on the Braves team and many others. The process has just begun, we will keep everyone updated as we start receiving rosters. We hope to post scouting reports on nearly all the teams entered. We will also be covering the qualifiers.
