With a projectable and athletic broad-shouldered pitching frame, Russell is especially difficult to hit with a very fast arm and a deceptive release. His fastball peaks in the mid-90s, comfortably working in the low-90s while mixing in a nasty low- to mid-80s slider that is especially tough to hit given his arm angle. Russell's stature allows him to sustain his velocity deep into ballgames, and his changeup gives him the requisite three pitches to develop into a future staff ace.
