California Top Prospect Showcase - Top Prospects
2006 Position Players
Jared Jordan-C-L/R-Canyon
Springs HS, Moreno Valley, CA-6'1"/190-
He is a strong left hand hitting catcher with present day power. Jordan has
very good bat speed and easily moves through the zone with the ability to drive
the ball from gap to gap. Quick feet and a quick exchange behind the plate,
there will be plenty of collegiate and professional interest in him in the
springtime.
Cody Fierro-1B-R/L-Newbury
Park HS, Newbury Park, CA-6'3"/195-
Fierro can really swing the bat. He has plus bat speed and excellent balance,
with an aggressive approach. The ball jumps off his bat and he has present
power from gap to gap. He is a plus defensive player, with soft hands,
excellent footwork, and a passion for playing defense.
Robby Salomon-3B-R/R-Serra
HS, Woodside, CA-6'0"/175-
Strong hitter with ability to drive the ball from gap to gap. Hitting
fundamentals are outstanding, including his hand path, balance, and bat speed.
Excellent defensive player who makes the plays he is supposed to and then some.
Finishes plays with a strong arm. His hands are an asset on offense and
defense. Prototype third baseman.
Dylan Graham-1B-R/R-St.
Augustine HS, La Mesa, CA-6'0"/200-
Has legitimate and current power type bat. Creates good rhythm and uses his
hands very well in his swing. The ball carries well off his bat and he drives
the ball to all parts of the yard. He has soft hands at 1st base and
uses his feet pretty well. Graham is a future four or five hole hitter at the
D1 level.
Andrew Raponi-1B/RHP-L/R-Monte
Vista HS, Danville, CA-6'3"/210-
Physical hitter with easy power, but also has the ability and willingness to use
the whole field. Hands work very well in his swing, he will drive mistakes, hit
his pitch hard, yet will also cut down his swing when down in the count. On the
mound he has throws a heavy mid-80s fastball and has feel of a very usable
splitter. The ball comes out of his hand with little effort.
Glenn Gray-OF-L/L-Scripps
Ranch HS, San Diego, CA-5'10"/170-
Showed a lively bat with an aggressive approach. Flat bat path creates backspin
at contact, signaling some future power potential. Gray is a fundamentally
sound defensive player too. He should play early in his college career and
immediately contribute with the bat.
Tyson Edwards-2B-L/R-West
HS, Tracy, CA-5'6"/140-
Doesn't look the part, but Edwards can really hit and has surprising power.
Very quick bat and a short swing, he takes an aggressive hack but has bat
control. Plays the game with tremendous energy, the type of player his
teammates love to play with and opponents see as a pest. The D1 college game
suits him very well.
Ryne Fogleman-SS-R/R-Serra
HS, San Diego, CA-6'0"/160-
Fogleman is an interesting athlete with good hands and feet that show up
defensively and offensively. He is a play maker on defense, both to his left
and to his right. He should be able to stay at SS. He is a spray line drive
hitter with some liveliness in his aggressive swing. More of a projection type
prospect, but his skill set is strong.
2006 Pitchers
Jonathan
Abramson-RHP-R/R-Menlo-Atherton HS, Atherton, CA-6'3"/170-
Long and lanky righty with an easily projectable body and arm. Loose and quick
arm produces mid-80s fastballs with very good arm side action. He spins his
slurvy breaking ball well and shows some feel for the change-up. The type of
pitcher who could be in the upper 80s this spring and everyone will ask, “Where
did he come from?"
Robbie Selden-RHP-R/R-Canyon
Springs HS, Moreno Valley, CA-6'4"/190-
Another very projectable righty with a loose arm and lively body. His fastball
approaches the mid-80s now, but his arm action and body suggest much more,
likely this spring. His fastball has plus sink action and dives below bats.
Selden gets tight spin on his spike curveball, however, a slider could take his
repertoire to a new level. Likely that a number of scouts will see him as a
strong draft and follow candidate.
2007 Players
Deryk Hooker-RHP-R/R-Mira
Mesa HS, Mira Mesa, CA-6'3"/185-
He has a quick, aggressive arm and a body that suggests plenty of
projectability. Hooker gets very good sink on his fastball but also has life
down and away. His breaking ball is a bit slurvy, but he spins it well. A more
compact delivery will sharpen all his stuff, which should be in the 88-91 range
in the spring.
Robert
Johnson-C-R/R-Issaquah HS, Issaquah, WA-5'10"/165-
Johnson has excellent catch/throw abilities and is an athletic receiver behind
the plate. His exchange is very clean and quick. Future arm strength gains
should allow him to be a consistent 1.95-2.05 thrower. He also has a quick bat
and sound hitting approach.
