Since the first Aflac All American Classic in 2003, Perfect Game has selected each and every player to wear the Aflac All American uniforms. It’s a tough job selecting only 38 players out of the entire country. Even tougher when these players are selected a full year before they can be drafted by Major League clubs or finish their senior high school year. Then the selections need to be separated by East and West and both teams require that all positions be filled including backups.

Perhaps this is a good time to grade PG on their selections over the first 3 years.

2003 Aflac All Americans – A look at some of the top Aflac players from that year…

YEAR #1

Nick Adenhart – RHP – MD
Nick was a sure first round choice, but late in his final high school season he had Tommy John surgery and slipped in the draft. The Angels drafted him and paid him early round money to sign. It’s now looking like the Angels made a very wise move. Adenhart is one of the Angels prized prospects.

Matt Bush – SS – CA
Matt became the very first player selected in the 2004 draft by the San Diego Padres.

Mark Rogers – RHP – ME
Mark was the first HS pitcher selected in the 2004 draft 1st round, 5th pick. He signed with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Homer Bailey – RHP – TX
Homer was the second HS pitcher selected in the 1st round, 7th pick, and signed with the Cincinnati Reds.

Chris Nelson – SS – GA
Chris like Adenhart had Tommy John surgery; however his was during the winter. He came back and was the second HS position player selected in the 2004 draft as the 9th overall pick. Chris signed with the Colorado Rockies.

Neil Walker – C – PA
Neil was the first catcher selected, 11th overall pick by the Pirates in 2004. He was the 5th Aflac All American to get drafted in the first 11 picks. All the others were drafted out of college.

Trevor Plouffe – SS – CA
1st round pick and signed with the Minnesota Twins

Greg Golson – OF – TX
1st Round pick and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies

Eric Hurley – RHP – FL
1st round pick and signed with the Texas Rangers

Gio Gonzalez – LHP – FL
1st round pick and signed with the Chicago White Sox

Jay Rainville – RHP – RI
1st Round pick and signed with the Minnesota Twins

Eric Campbell – SS – IN
2nd round pick and signed with the Atlanta Braves.

A few other Aflac players drafted in 2004 included
Dexter Fowler GA, Chris Garcia FL, Luke French CO, Javier Guerra TX, Cale Iorg TN, Chuck Lofgren CA, Troy Patton TX, and others.

Overall the 2003 Aflac All Americans included – 10 first rounders plus Adenhart and Fowler who signed for early round money.

YEAR #2

2004 Aflac All Americans – A look at some of the top Aflac players from that year…

Justin Upton – SS – VA
Justin made it two straight years that the #1 pick in the MLB draft was an aflac All American. He signed with the Arizona D’Backs for an all time record bonus.







Cameron Maybin – OF – NC
Cameron was the second high school player selected, 1st round 10th pick, he signed with the Detroit Tigers








Andrew McCutchen – OF – FL
Andrew was the 3rd HS player selected with the 11th pick and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates.








Chris Volstad – RHP – FL
Chris was the first high school pitcher selected in the 2005 draft. 1st round, 16th pick, he signed with the Florida Marlins








CJ Henry – SS – OK
CJ was selected with the 17th pick and signed with the New York Yankees

John Drennen – OF – CA
1st round pick and signed with the Cleveland Indians








Ryan Tucker – RHP – CA
1st round pick and signed with the Florida Marlins

Bill Rowell – SS – NJ
Billy was the first high school position player selected with the 9th pick, first round and signed by the Baltimore Orioles








Kasey Kiker – LHP – AL
Kasey was selected and signed by the Texas Rangers with the 12th pick of the first round.








Chris Marrero - 3B – FL
Chris was selected and signed by the Washington Nationals with the 15th pick of the first round.








Jeremy Jeffress – RHP – VA
Jeremy was selected and signed by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 16th pick of the first round. He was gunned at 100 mph during his final high school season.







Kyle Drabek – RHP – TX
Kyle was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 18th pick of the first round.

Chris Parmelee – OF – CA
Chris was selected and signed by the Minnesota Twins with the 20th pick of the first round.








Colton Willems – RHP – FL
Colton was selected and signed by the Washington Nationals with the 22nd pick of the first round.

Max Sapp – C – FL
Max was selected and signed by the Houston Astros with the 23rd pick of the first round. He was the first catcher selected in the 2006 draft.







Cody Johnson – OF – FL
Cody was selected and signed by the Atlanta Braves with the 24th pick of the first round.








Hank Conger – C – CA
Hank was selected and signed by the LA Angels with the 25th pick of the first round. He was the second catcher drafted last year.

Jason Place – OF – SC
Jason was originally selected by Perfect Game to be an Aflac All American, but the SC high school association would not allow his participation. Jason was selected and signed by the Boston Red Sox with the 27th pick of the first round.

Cory Rasmus – RHP – AL
Cory was selected and signed by the Atlanta Braves with the 38th pick of the first round.

David Christensen – OF – FL

Overall the 2005 Aflac All Americans included – 11 first rounders and 5 second rounders and a couple third rounders. And Jason Place another first rounder who was originally selected but could not play. Nearly half of all those players selected by Perfect Game on last year’s (2005) Aflac All-American Teams were drafted in the first two rounds. And the Aflac All-American teams are selected a full year before the draft takes place.

Looking at the results from the first three years of Aflac All Americans selected by Perfect Game USA, here are the totals.

116 total players
29 were selected in the first round
41 were selected in the first two rounds.

In other words more than one out of every three Aflac All Americans have been selected in the first two rounds the following year. Exactly one out of every four Aflac All Americans have been selected in the first round the following year. And then there were others like Adenhart, Fowler, and Jackson who were drafted later but signed for first round money.

Of course, many others decided to attend college and are among the top prospects in college baseball. So it will take awhile before the real final results are in on the first three classes of Aflac All Americans. For sure, there are more first rounders yet to come from the first three years of the Aflac All-American Classic.

While the above totals are amazing, it’s been said by the PG scouts that this year’s Aflac All American’s are, by far, the best class yet! Holy Cow!!!
