2008 Top Prospects

Sean Adelman  RHP - 2008 - Boynton Beach, FL
Palm Beach State

Adelman is one of the high velocity pitchers in the 2008 class, already touching 92 mph with lots more in his 6-3, 180 lb frame. How his breaking ball develops will be key.

Raiko Alfonso  MIF - 2008 - Key West, FL
Florida International

As a freshman and sophomore, Alfonso gained more notice with his glove. Ironically, it’s his switch-hitting ability and power potential than is noticed first now.

Jack Armstrong  RHP - 2008 - Jupiter, FL
Vanderbilt

Former #1 pick (1987) Jack Armstrong’s son might be the most projectable pitcher in the country. He’s 6-7 and extra loose and athletic and is already throwing in the upper 80’s with good feel for his pitches.

Joseph (Jay) Austin  OF - 2008 - Atlanta, GA
Southern California

Austin has a 2009 birthdate and potential 5-tool ability. Watching how his power continues to develop as he matures will be a key. Don’t be surprised to see him move up the prospect list over the next year.

Xavier Avery  OF - 2008 - Decatur, GA
Georgia

Avery ran the top 60 at the showcase at 6.49 and is starting to get bigger and stronger. He has surprising pop in his bat and can cover all of centerfield.

Joey Belviso  OF - 2008 - Pembroke Pines, FL
Jacksonville

Belviso is a potential 5-tool player as his bat continues to come around. He’s a 6.5 runner with strength and a powerful arm.

Tyler Bremer  RHP - 2008 - Berkeley, CA
UC Davis/Yavapai College

Bremer topped out at 88 mph with excellent life on his fastball. His curveball and change up are quality pitches and he attacks hitters aggressively.

Brian Busch  LHP - 2008 - Boca Raton, FL
Florida State

Busch is extra strong at 6-3, 210 lbs and has present tools on both sides of the ball that play at the upper college level.

Tyler Cline  RHP - 2008 - Cartersville, GA
Middle Georgia State University

Cline is a primary outfielder right now but we see him as a full-time pitcher before long. He throws 90 mph with plus life and a nice slider.

Jarred Cosart  OF - 2008 - League City, TX
Missouri

The 6-3, 170 lb Cosart was up to 93 mph with a variety of secondary pitches and is very projectable. He also showed prospect level hitting ability. It will be interesting to see how he develops over the next year or two.

Jordan Craft  OF - 2008 - Kennesaw, GA
Kennesaw State

Craft has all the tools and is still projectable. He hits and hits with power, runs 6.8 and throws 93 from the outfield and in the upper 80’s from the mound.

Hunter Cross  3B - 2008 - Grove Hill, AL
Uncommitted

Cross has quick hands and excellent raw bat speed and the chance to hit with both power and average with some adjustments.

Brett DeVall  LHP - 2008 - Niceville, FL
Georgia

DeVall threw 92 mph, his slider was the best breaking ball at the showcase and his change up was almost as good. He’s very athletic at 6-4, 205 and everything comes together so easily when he throws. DeVall might be the top 2008 pitcher in the country.

Spencer Dickinson  SS - 2008 - Tequesta, FL
Florida State

Dickinson is a toolsy outfielder with 6.9 speed, plus arm strength and a good bat. It would be interesting to see him play the infield.

Brian Ellington  RHP - 2008 - Gainesville, FL
Florida State

The 6-3, 170 lb Ellington is the rare young pitcher who throws 90-91 but who’s curveball and change up are better present pitches. He’s high ceiling talent if he can make some delivery adjustments.

Chris Ellison  OF - 2008 - Norman, OK
Oklahoma

Ellison is a quick twitch athlete who has top level bat speed and quickness and projects plenty of strength. He’s also a 6.8 runner who throws 90 mph.

Luke Erickson  LHP - 2008 - Richmond, VA
Virginia Tech

Erickson has some mechanical issues to work through but there aren’t many better southpaw arms. He throws 90 mph and his curveball has nasty late break to it.

Anthony Ferrara  LHP - 2008 - Riverview, FL
South Florida

Consistency seems to be the key to Ferrara ’s game. He’s been low 90’s with plus life on his fastball every time he’s taken the mound for us the past year.

Roman Fondon  LHP - 2008 - Pembroke Pines, FL
Florida International

Fondon’s curveball and change up are top pitches and his mid-80’s fastball keeps hitters off-balance. He’s been a big winner at WWBA events.

Wesley Freeman  OF - 2008 - Lakeland, FL
University of Central Florida

Scouts will bear down on the 6-4, 215 lb Freeman over the next 1 ½ years. He runs 6.7 and has big time power potential.

Erick Gaylord  3B - 2008 - Dallas, GA
Darton College

Gaylord’s age is firmly in the 2009 class, but his present tools make him standout among the 2008’s. He has middle infield skills with very good offensive potential.

Brad Goldberg  RHP - 2008 - Beachwood, OH
Coastal Carolina

Goldberg is big and strong at 6-3, 215 and is a polished pitcher for his age. He commands three pitches well, including an 89 mph fastball and sharp curve.

Rolando Gomez  MIF - 2008 - Pembroke Pines, FL
Miami

Gomez’ defense has taken a step forward and he’s looking more and more like an upper level shortstop. His left handed bat has always been his primary tool.

Tyler Hanover  MIF - 2008 - Kernersville, NC
Louisiana State

Hanover is a high performance gamer but it was good to see him in a showcase environment, too. He plays well above his tools but his tools are pretty good.

Tyler Hibbs  RHP - 2008 - Odenton, MD
Tallahassee CC

Hibbs isn’t physical at 5-11, 165 but his upper 80’s fastball is projectable and his slider is one of the best breaking balls in the 2008 class.

Taylor Hightower  C - 2008 - Cartersville, GA
Mississippi

Hightower’s defensive skills are exceptional, with consistent sub 1.80’s pops and very good athletic agility. His bat is developing well and he has the strength to drive the ball.

Eric Hosmer  1B - 2008 - Cooper City, FL
Arizona State

Hosmer is the best hitter in the 2008 class and is likely to remain in that position. He also threw 90 mph across the infield and was in excellent physical condition.

Conner Hulse  RHP - 2008 - Scottsdale, AZ
Harvard

Hulse has a young body and an upper 80’s fastball from a low ¾’s release point that has excellent life when it’s down in the zone.

Corban Joseph  SS - 2008 - Franklin, TN
Kentucky

Joseph is a slick fielding shortstop but his real tool is his left handed bat. He is a very advanced hitter who has plus bat speed and an excellent swing.

Casey Kelly  SS - 2008 - Sarasota, FL
Tennessee

Kelly has the strength, speed and easy athletic actions of a top prospect. Whether he chooses baseball or football (QB) to shine in is still to be determined.

Brandon King  OF - 2008 - Wellington, FL
Uncommitted

King is a high ceiling athlete, who can run and throw at a high level and is very loose and projectable. We understand he’s a top pitching prospect, too, but he didn’t take the mound at this event.

Nick Leone  C - 2008 - Oldsmar, FL
Uncommitted

Leone is big and strong and has polished tools on both sides of the ball. Being a left handed power hitter is a big plus for a catcher.

Matt Marquis  OF - 2008 - Annandale, NJ
Vanderbilt

Marquis has big time power potential and the ball jumps off his bat. His other tools (6.9 runner, 86 arm strength) play, too.

Daniel Marrs  RHP - 2008 - Midlothian, VA
Wake Forest

Marrs didn’t throw any breaking balls in what amounted to an off-season workout, but he did throw 93-94 mph frequently and his split finger continues to improve with more consistent mechanics.

Harold Martinez  SS - 2008 - Miami, FL
Miami

Martinez ’s arm strength is at the top of the class and his defensive actions are a match. He showed us excellent bat speed we hadn’t seen before.

Christopher Matulis  LHP - 2008 - Boynton Beach, FL
Louisiana State

If you want a sleeper on this list, the 6-5, 195 lb Matulis might be it. He has high ceiling potential both as a pitcher and hitter when he gets stronger.

Brennan May  OF - 2008 - Fayetteville, GA
Georgia

May is a very live bodied, high ceiling athlete with 6.53 speed and very good raw bat speed. He could become one of the top OF’ers in the class as he improves his overall fundamentals and skills.

Adam McConnell  SS - 2008 - Yorktown, VA
Richmond

McConnell’s tools are solid across the board and he has pure shortstop actions. He has some juice in his bat and throws 85 mph off the mound as well.

Marcos Mejia  SS - 2008 - Miramar, FL
Uncommitted

Mejia is big and physical for a shortstop but has easy, smooth actions and a cannon arm. His strength gives him very good bat speed and gap power.

Brandon Miller  C - 2008 - Tyrone, GA
Georgia Tech

Miller combines very good tools with a high energy, hustling approach to the game. His defensive tools will rank with the best in the 2008 class, but he can hit, too.

Blake Newalu  MIF - 2008 - McDonough, GA
San Diego

Newalu’s tools keep getting better, especially his speed (6.6) and he’s a top level defender who knows how to play.

Adrian Nieto  C - 2008 - Hialeah, FL
South Florida

A switch-hitting catcher with power from both sides, Nieto will be among the elite level catchers in the 2008 class. His defense keeps getting better every time we see him.

Tyler Pastornicky  MIF - 2008 - Bradenton, FL
Florida State

Pastornicky keeps getting better every time we see him. He can play shortstop at a high level and his bat is coming on quickly. He also has as much fun playing as anyone we see.

William Piwnica-Worms  OF - 2008 - St Louis, MO
Duke

Piwnica-Worms has an excellent projectable frame and top level power/speed tools. Top level academic schools should get on him quickly due to his academics.

Mark Pope  RHP - 2008 - Marietta, GA
Georgia Tech

Pope isn’t the hardest thrower on the prospect list, topping out at 88 mph, but he has a killer 75 mph curveball and excellent command of his pitches.

David Putman  RHP - 2008 - Doylestown, PA
Duke

Putnam combines very good pitchability with a nasty curveball and a upper 80’s fastball.

J P Ramirez  OF - 2008 - New Braunfels, TX
Tulane

One of the top hitters in the 2008 class, Ramirez hits with power to all fields and has excellent bat speed. His athletic tools are solid, but his bat makes him special.

Vickash Ramjit  3B - 2008 - Miami, FL
Miami

Ramjit has a pro profile body at 6-3, 195 and has upper level defensive skills at third base, along with some power in his bat.

Matt Ramsey  C - 2008 - Knoxville, TN
Tennessee

Ramsey pitched (92 mph FB), played outfield and caught, all at a high level. We like his tools and skills best behind the plate.

Jordan Rasinski  RHP - 2008 - Winter Springs, FL
University of Central Florida

Rasinski throws 92 mph off the mound with very good fastball life. He’s also an outfield prospect with good speed and some pop in his bat.

Alexander Robinson  OF - 2008 - Dallas, TX
Notre Dame

Robinson has serious juice in his bat right handed and is solid swinging left handed, too. He’s a quality defensive outfielder with speed (6.9) and arm strength.

Maryland

The son of a former professional middle infielder, Rodriguez has very smooth and easy defensive skills at shortstop. His bat has improved as he’s become stronger.

Ezekiel Spruill  RHP - 2008 - Marietta, GA
Georgia

Spruill is long and lean at 6-5, 185 lbs and throws 90 with a sharp 80 mph slider. His stuff projects well and no 2008 throws more strikes or has better command.

Evan Stermer  1B - 2008 - Wellington, FL
Uncommitted

Stermer’s bat keeps getting better and better as he gets stronger and more experienced. He’s still a pretty good left handed pitcher, too.

Jardian Thomas  OF - 2008 - Gainesville, FL
College of Charleston

Thomas is a quick twitch quick athlete with multiple raw tools that could play big as his game matures.

Jomel Torres  1B - 2008 - Chula Vista, CA
San Diego State

Torres slammed 2 game home runs and showed in BP that it was no accident. He has a lightning quick left handed swing and attacks the ball aggressively.

Michael Turnbull  LHP - 2008 - Katy, TX
Uncommitted

Turnbull projects well at 6-2, 160 with a loose, easy arm and has all the pitches and the ability to use them. His fastball topped at 87 mph with much more there.

Steven Upchurch  RHP - 2008 - Mobile, AL
Auburn

Upchurch is high the projectable list; he’s 6-4, 175 lbs and everything comes easy to him on the mound. He topped out at 88 mph and had the ability to add and subtract, spin the ball and locate in the strike zone.

Clayton VanderLaan  RHP - 2008 - Houston, TX
Michigan State

Vanderlean is a 6-0 right hander who throws 90 mph, but he has so much life on his fastball that he’s going to be awfully hard to hit consistently.

Chris Wakefield  RHP - 2008 - Canton, GA
Northern Illinois

Wakefield dominated, striking out all 9 hitters with a 91 mph fastball and sharp 76 mph slurve. He’s a good hitter, too, who can play both ways at the college level.

Ryan Weber  RHP - 2008 - St. Petersburg, FL
Florida

Weber’s pitchability is at the top of the 2008 class. His fastball has moved up to the upper 80’s with outstanding life and his slider is a strikeout pitch.

Michael Williams  C - 2008 - Knoxville, TN
Kentucky

Williams has present strength, physical tools and very sound fundamentals behind the plate for a young catcher.

Mac Williamson  RHP - 2008 - Wake Forest, NC
Wake Forest

Williamson told us that he wanted to be considered a pitching prospect, not a catcher. Then he went out and proved it, throwing 90-92 with a loose, easy arm and very good CB/SL potential. We’re convinced.

Tommy Winegardner  SS - 2008 - St. Leonard, MD
Coastal Carolina

Winegardner’s arm and defensive skills are a big plus at shortstop. He’s a switch-hitter who has bat speed and projects some power. Winegardner also throws 90 mph off the mound.

Austin Wood  RHP - 2008 - Niceville, FL
Florida State

Woods has a profile pitcher’s frame at 6-4, 200 lbs and throws 90 mph with little effort. He’s a quality athlete who could be a solid OF prospect as well.

Tyson Workman  SS - 2008 - Tallahassee, FL

A two-way prospect who grades out higher on the mound right now, Workman throws 90 with a nasty slider and has solid middle infield skills.

2009 Top Prospects

Jared Avidon  RHP - 2009 - High Point, NC
High Point

Avidon throws 90 mph from a low ¾’s release point and has excellent life. His secondary pitches are solid as well. He’s a quality athlete who could be very, very hard to hit as he gets stronger and throws harder.

Walter Bishop  LHP - 2009 - Westbury, NY
Millersville

Bishop is a strong athlete who throws 94 from the outfield along with 91 from the mound, while running a 6.9. He could blossom in any number of different ways.

Bobby Borchering  3B - 2009 - Alva, FL
Florida

At 6-4, 185, Borchering has long limbs and excellent leverage in his swing from both sides of the plate. With some strength he could become a special type of hitter.

Malcolm Clapsaddle  RHP - 2009 - Geneva,
Georgia

Clapsaddle already pitches like a veteran with command and three solid pitches. His velocity projects easily from his present 86-88 mph.

Shane Crain  C - 2009 - Lexington, KY
Louisville

Crain is tall and angular at 6-2, 180, but very light and quick on his feet. All his tools project out well and he has potential on the mound as well.

Blake Crohan  C - 2009 - Roswell, GA
Tulane

Crohan’s bat is very advanced for a 2009 catcher. He’s loose and athletic and projects very well.

Nick Franklin  SS - 2009 - Longwood, FL
Auburn

A quality two-way prospect, Franklin has a loose, powerful arm that touches the low 90’s. He’s also a switch-hitter with a quick left handed swing and a sub-7.00 runner.

Connor Harrell  OF - 2009 - Houston, TX
Vanderbilt

Harrell is big-time power/speed potential as he grows into his 6-2 frame. He runs 6.7 already and has a strong outfield arm.

Daniel Healey  RHP - 2009 - Cooper City, FL
Florida

Healy throws in the upper 80’s with an easy arm action and hasn’t started to fill out his 6-2 frame yet.

Michael Heller  MIF - 2009 - Bradenton, FL
Florida

The multi-talented Heller could go either way the next few years, either as a hard throwing pitcher or as a athletic middle infielder with some pop in his bat.

Christopher Knott  RHP - 2009 - Brandon, FL
FSCJ

Knott is 6-3, 170 lbs and is very athletic. He will hit and hit with power as he gets stronger but he might have a bigger upside on the mound.

Joseph Lovecchio  RHP - 2009 - Wilbur By the Sea, FL
Miami

Lovecchio pounds the strike zone with a solid 87 mph fastball/71 mph curveball combo and is very projectable.

Mike Lubanski  C - 2009 - Collegeville, PA
Wake Forest

Chris Lubanski’s younger brother is a completely different athlete, with excellent present strength, a power bat and catching skills that are coming on quickly.

Deven Marrero  MIF - 2009 - Davie, FL
Arizona State

Marrero has played above his class defensively for some time, but his bat has caught up quickly as he’s matured. He’s a different athlete than 1st cousin Chris (2006 1st round pick of the Reds) but might be just as talented.

Donald Matson  RHP - 2009 - Naples, FL
Uncommitted

The 2009 list is full of young, projectable pitchers who throw in the mid to upper 80’s. Matson is one of them.

William Medina  MIF - 2009 - North Lauderdale, FL
Seminole State College of Florida

Medina is small framed (5-9, 140) but has top level body life and excellent defensive skills. He can swing the bat, but people will talk about him for his glove.

Ronnie Mitchell  OF - 2009 - Southlake, TX
Uncommitted

A two-way left handed prospect, Mitchell strongly resembles Isaiah Froneberger from the 2007 class physically and tool-wise.

Cooper Moseley  MIF - 2009 - Montgomery, AL
Georgia

Moseley is a quick twitch athlete with outstanding baseball skills. He has lightning bat speed from the left side and all the skills to play shortstop, including a cannon arm that throws 90 off the mound.

Patrick Schuster  LHP - 2009 - Holiday, FL
Florida

The 6-4 Schuster throws from a low 3/4’s cross fire delivery that may need adjustments, but his stuff is present nasty and hard to hit.

Stephen Seger  OF - 2009 - Houston, TX
University of Southern Mississippi

Seger has one of the most projectable power bats in the 2009 class and when he grows into his 6-3 frame, he’s going to be very strong.

Cade Stallings  3B - 2009 - Knoxville, TN
Louisville

Stallings is plus present strong and the ball just explodes off his bat. He also throws 88 mph off the mound.

Arthur Strauss  RHP - 2009 - Birmingham, AL
Uncommitted

Strauss is a slender 6-2 and has a smooth and easy arm that generates a 87 mph that is sure to improve with strength.

Michael Theodore  RHP - 2009 - Bloomfield Hills, MI
Tennessee

Theodore is present strong at 6-2, 190 and throws upper 80’s with little effort and smooth mechanics. His slider looks like a potential plus pitch.

Michael Zunino  C - 2009 - Cape Coral, FL
Florida

Zunino, whose father Greg is a Reds area scout, has mature skills and a strong balance of defensive and hitting tools. He’s athletic and very projectable.

2010 Top Prospects

Kaleb Cowart  OF - 2010 - Adel, GA
Florida State

Like many 2010’s, it’s difficult to say where Cowart is a better propect. He’s athletic, swing the bat with authority and is loose and polished on the mound.

Trey Griffin  OF - 2010 - Stockbridge, GA
Oklahoma State

Comparisons to a young Cameron Maybin seem appropriate, especially when it comes to the type of power that Griffin will start developing over the next few years.

Jeff Jackson  C - 2010 - Wauconda, IL
Wabash Valley College

Jackson doesn’t look or play like a freshman, especially on defense. He’s going to be big and strong and hit with power some day.

Matt Morse  MIF - 2010 - Sandwich, IL
University of Alabama at Birmingham

Morse has a live, athletic body and is already showing very good bat speed with wood with some pop. He plays some outfield but projects best in the infield.

Tyler Ross  C - 2010 - Naples, FL
Louisiana State

Freshman catchers popping under 1.90 and throwing 77 mph get attention, and Ross’s bat looks just as good as his defensive tools.

Jacob Tillotson  SS - 2010 - Lake City, FL
Florida/Santa Fe College

The best comparison for Tillotson is that he’s a young John Tolisano who throws 90 mph off the mound. The switch-hitting ability and precocious athleticism are similar.

Free Agents Top Prospects

Damarii Saunderson  LHP - Free Agents - Novi, MI
Iowa Western CC

Saunderson is a quality projectable two-way prospect who throws 87 off the mound and can run and hit. He could be a sleeper from up north.
