2012 Top Prospects

Carlos Correa  SS - 2012 - Santa Isabel, PR
Miami

Correa's performance was one of the best ever seen at a Perfect Game showcase, or any other for that matter. From his unprecedented arm strength to his present home run power, Correa firmly marked himself as a potential top 5 pick in the June draft.

Edwin Diaz  RHP - 2012 - Naguabo, PR
Uncommitted

Diaz was the top pitching prospect at the event, edging out fellow Puerto Rican J.O. Berrios, who he will be compared to frequently this spring. Diaz was up to 94 mph with very good life on his fastball at times and showed an ever improving ability to change speeds with his curveball and change up.

Wyatt Mathisen  C - 2012 - Corpus Christi, TX
Texas

Mathisen rarely gets to catch in front of scouts, as he is a shortstop/pitcher most of the year, so this was an excellent and much appreciated opportunity for him to show his tools, which are definitely in the plus area. His bat and power graded out among the best at the showcase.

Bryan De La Rosa  C - 2012 - Toa Alta, PR
Florida State

De La Rosa put on an all around display of tools offensively and defensively that was only second to Correa's. He threw 85 mph from behind the plate while popping an eye opening 1.71, then crushed the ball in BP and games. The only thing that goes against him is his size, the tools are huge.

Jamal Martin  OF - 2012 - West Palm Beach, FL
Florida State

Martin had a turf toe injury that limited his running ability to quick spurts but he's run 6.39 and 6.46 for us in the past, so speed is not an open question. Where he impressed was with the power and bat speed he showed from the left side and his ability to drive the ball up the alleys.

Fernelys Sanchez  OF - 2012 - New York, NY
Central Arizona CC

Sanchez has been one of the most scouted players in the country during the past two summers but he's never shown close to the power and bat speed he had from the left side at the World Showcase. It was a strong statement and a great sign for Sanchez's future potential.

Jose Orlando Berrios  RHP - 2012 - Bayamon, PR
Uncommitted

Berrios' raw stuff was every bit as good as Edwin Diaz', including a fastball that touched 93 mph frequently, a big breaking curveball and a lively change up. But Berrios didn't have his usual sharp command and repeatable mechanics this outing, something that is key to his overall package.

Justin Alleman  RHP - 2012 - Holt, MI
Michigan State

Alleman is a big and physically mature right hander with solid present stuff and the ability to use it. He pitched comfortably in the 89-92 mph range and snapped off some upper 70's curveballs that showed plus potential.

Jake Fossick  RHP - 2012 - Port Charlotte, FL
North Florida

Fossick was a "game time decision" to pitch due to a sprained ankle but looked sharp in striking out 5 out of 6 hitters. His Hideo Nomo-style delivery is very deceptive and makes his 89-91 mph fastball and 76 mph power curveball look firmer than they already are.

Christopher Chinea  C - 2012 - Miami, FL
Louisiana State

Chinea missed most of last summer with an injury and scouts are still catching up on him. He showed he was a definite draft prospect in Fort Myers, hitting the ball consistently hard from the right side and showing a high level of quickness and arm strength behind the plate.

Jordan Ebert  2B - 2012 - Foley, AL
Auburn

Ebert is a prospect best watched under game conditions as his high energy style of play performs best in live actions rather than drills. His bat will stand out at any position on the field but it will be interesting to follow what position he eventually lands at. If he can handle second base professionally, that really raises his ceiling.

Nelson Rodriguez  C - 2012 - New York, NY
Central Arizona CC

When Rodriguez learns to pull the ball on a more consistent basis his raw power could get scary. He hit two balls off the batter's eye at Terry Park and that's a long, long way away. Just as important to his professional future is how hard he works at maintaining his defensive agility behind the plate.

Corbin Olmstead  3B - 2012 - Tampa, FL
North Florida

Olmstead is still a primary third baseman and a legitmate two-way potential college standout but his long-term future is on the mound. He has a low effort, simple delivery that generates a consistent 90-91 mph fastball, although his curveball might be his best pitch in terms of both quality and command.

Zac Favre  RHP - 2012 - Jacksonville, FL
University of Central Florida

Favre has a very solid and mature 6-4/210 build and a fastball that touched 90 mph. The pitch that got everyone's attention, though, was an 83 mph slider that had outstanding sharp bite and was a plus pitch at times, especially when thrown down and in to left handed hitters.

Ian Rice  C - 2012 - Huntsville, AL
University of Houston

Rice might have been the most improved player at the showcase compared to the last time we saw him perform. His bat speed was extremely impressive and made the left field fence at Terry Park look short and his athleticism catching had made the same step forward.

Alexis Rivera  OF - 2012 - Kissimmee, FL
Florida International

Rivera is an immensely strong 6-2/220 left handed hitter who has performed at a high level at numerous WWBA events in the past. He has bat speed that few hitters in the 2012 class can match and he's a few swing adjustments away from being a surprisingly high pick in the upcoming draft.

Phildrick Llewellyn  C - 2012 - Boynton Beach, FL
Florida International

Llewellyn was only at the event for the second day but was very impressive. He is one of the more athletic catchers in the country defensively and might be a bit underappreciated by the scouting community. He's also a switch-hitter, a rarity among catchers.

Zachary Bird  RHP - 2012 - Jackson, MS
University of Southern Mississippi

The 6-4/195 Bird has a projectable power pitcher's body but threw with surprising variety of pitches. He's been up to 91 mph in the past and projects more velocity but watching him spin curveballs, sliders and cutters and drop in some nice change ups was promising and entertaining.

Reynaldo Ordonez Jr  SS - 2012 - Doral, FL
Florida International

Ordonez plays the game very smoothly and easily, perhaps to the point where his true tools and skills are still a bit under evaluated. If he can stay at shortstop his future potential just keeps getting better because he should develop plenty of power as he fills out.

Joey Curletta  3B - 2012 - Phoenix, AZ
Central Arizona CC

Curletta is a physical specimen at 6-4/230 but is much more athletic than you would expect for a young player that size. Power is not surprisingly his big ticket tool; he hit 20+ home runs in high school last year and made Terry Park look small in batting practice.

Wilfredo Rodriguez  C - 2012 - Carolina, PR
Seminole State College

Rodriguez's strength, power potential and right handed bat speed stood out in batting practice and in the games. He's deceptively athletic for a thickly built 5-10/200 catcher and has run down to 6.86 in the past.

Malcom Diaz  RHP - 2012 - San Juan, PR
Alabama State

Diaz has a very loose and projectable arm and great feel for a lively fastball that reaches 91 mph with more to come. He is still learning to spin the ball but flashed a cutting fastball that showed slider potential.

George Ragsdale  SS - 2012 - North Port, FL
Virginia

Ragsdale had one of the most impressive bats at the showcase. He has a low effort right handed swing with very good bat speed and big pull power. He isn't athletic enough to play in the middle of the field at the next level but his bat will play high.

Ismael Sanchez  SS - 2012 - Bayamon, PR
Uncommitted

Sanchez could be the one player we look back on in a few years and can say he was much better than how he ranked on this list. He has no real defined position and his skills are raw but he flashes huge athleticism both at the plate and in the middle of the field defensively.

Will Hurt  SS - 2012 - Lexington, KY
Coastal Carolina

Hurt is the type of prospect who could be very well served by going to college for three years and getting stronger. He has very smooth and balanced defensive actions at shortstop and squares the ball up consistently from very sound hitting mechanics. Drop 20-25 lbs of strength on Hurt's slender 5-11/160 frame and he's a top three round draft pick.

Kristian Brito  1B - 2012 - Yabucoa, PR

The 6-5/230 Brito has taken huge strides as a hitter since last summer, when his bat often looked long and slow against top level pitching. He's shortened his swing significantly while maintaining the strength and leverage that his size naturally provides him. There is still some work to do but Brito put himself on the draft map for most of the scouts in Fort Myers this weekend.

Trace Vorbeck  RHP - 2012 - Corbin, KY
Eastern Kentucky

Vorbeck came into the event as a primary pitcher but was more impressive as a very versatile position player with a strong right handed bat. He did throw up to 89 mph with a very nice curveball, too. He reminds us of top Red Sox prospect Bryce Brentz, a two-way standout in college at Middle Tennessee State.

Max Moroff  SS - 2012 - Orlando, FL
University of Central Florida

Moroff is similar to Jordan Ebert as a prospect with a half grade level less raw physical tools. Both play the game very hard with emotion, which makes their tools play up. If Moroff can stay at shortstop as a professional, his ceiling goes up.

Jorge Fernandez  C - 2012 - Yabucoa, PR
Alabama State

Fernandez is comparable to fellow Puerto Rican Ismael Sanchez in many ways. He doesn't have Sanchez' strength but is a looser, faster athlete who has not yet defined himself defensively. If he advances as a catcher defensively, that athleticism could make him a special type of catching prospect in the future.

Stephen Brooks  RHP - 2012 - Glen Allen, VA
Army

Brooks has a mature 6-2/205 build and an equally mature feel for pitching. He topped out at 90 mph while pitching consistently at 88 mph with good sinking life. His mid 70's curveball was a solid second pitch and he commanded it well.

2013 Top Prospects

Jan Alexis Hernandez  SS - 2013 - San Lorenzo, PR
Uncommitted

Hernandez played with a hip injury that limited his mobility but he was still very impressive. He's a slick fielder with lots of arm strength and has present bat speed. He doesn't have quite the physical tools and strength of Carlos Correa, but Hernandez is a definite prospect and likely the top 2013 talent in Puerto Rico.

Nick Longhi  1B - 2013 - Venice, FL
Louisiana State

Longhi just threw at the event as a courtesy to replace pitchers who could not attend, so scouts didn't get to see his powerful right handed bat. There is plenty to like about his left arm, however, which produced consistent upper 80's fastballs.
