2012 Top Prospects

Alec Rash  RHP - 2012 - Adel, IA
Missouri

Rash has made big gains with his control and off-speed pitch over the last two years. He touched 92 with his fastball on a good downhill plane and his 80 mph curveball had sharp two-plane break.

Mitchell Brown  RHP - 2012 - Rochester, MN
San Diego

Brown has been a top performer at many PG events over the past two years. He was up to 93 this summer and was up to 90, also showing two solid breaking pitches, a 76 mph curveball and 81 mph slider.

Calvin Mathews  RHP - 2012 - Bloomfield, IA
Iowa

Mathews arm works very well and it is easy to see more velocity in the future. He was up to 89, also showing a 78 mph curveball with hard 11/5 break and good feel for an 82 mph change.

Kevin Connolly  OF - 2012 - Omaha, NE
Creighton

A very good athlete, Connolly ran a 6.85 and showed very good arm strength, up to 92 from the outfield. He is raw at the plate but showed big power potential and lots of athleticism.

Michael Hadden  RHP - 2012 - Prior Lake, MN
Nebraska

A very good athlete who is a top-level two-way prospect, Hadden just pitch in the showcase, running his fastball up to 88 and showing good break on an 11/5 curveball and feel for a 79 mph changeup.

Josh Martsching  SS - 2012 - Bloomfield, IA
Iowa

A very interesting two-way player. Matsching has very good tools on the middle infield with very good arm strength. He has a smooth, left-handed swing at the plate and is also a 86-87 mph pitcher on the mound.

Zach Coppola  OF - 2012 - Windsor Heights, IA
South Dakota State

One of the best athletes at the event, Coppola blazed to a 6.74 sixty and threw 88 from the outfield. He is a plus baserunner with strength in his line drive swing and is a gamer type with lots of potential.

Jake Henson  C - 2012 - St. Peters, MO
St. Louis

One of the strongest players at the showcase, Henson stood out with his power bat at the plate and big arm strength behind it. He has solid catch and throw skills and does a very good job of centering the ball at the plate.

Brent Stong  LHP - 2012 - Andover, MN
Bradley

Stong is a good athlete who has shown upper 80s velocity in the spring. He was up to 87, also showing a big 12/6 curveball and some feel for a 76 mph changeup. He is also a good hitter with bat speed and power potential.

Tyler Peyton  RHP - 2012 - Grimes, IA
Iowa/Iowa Central CC

Peyton is a long, athletic pitcher with lots of potential. He was up to 88, with free and easy arm action and showed solid feel for a 74 mph curve and 74 mph change.

Brock Daniels  3B - 2012 - Pleasant Hill, IA
Southwest Iowa Community College

Daniels is a very good athlete who ran a 6.69 at June's Sunshine East Showcase. He is also a very good defender at SS, whose tools play at 3B or 2B as well. He handles velocity well at the plate, employing a simple line drive stroke.

JD Nielsen  LHP - 2012 - Winterset, IA
Illinois

Nielsen is a very good two-way player who was up to 85 with his fastball, pounding the zone with that pitch as well as a 72 mph curve. He also shows a power left-handed bat with a long power swing and very good extension.

Joe Erickson  RHP - 2012 - Urbandale, IA
South Dakota State

Erickson is an athletic player who projects well and should gain more velocity over the next year. He was 86 at the event with good sink, complimenting it with a 75 mph slider with good tilt.

Nick Sharrow  SS - 2012 - Bolingbrook, IL
Eastern Illinois

A versatile player who has good defensive tools at SS and behind the plate, Sharrow also showed strength and good bat speed at the plate.

Austin Wulff  OF - 2012 - Omaha, NE
Iowa Central CC

Wulff is a very good athlete with smooth arm action from the outfield. He runs the bases very well and has a smooth right-handed swing with extension and power potential.

Will Gormally  OF - 2012 - Fort Dodge, IA
Iowa Central CC

Gormally impressed with his athleticism and raw arm strength which was up to 90 mph from the outfield. He ran a 7.04 after running a 6.97 at April's Spring Top. He is an aggressive hitter with bat speed from the left side.

Anthony Shimkus  RHP - 2012 - Chicago, IL
Southern Illinois

Another versatile player, Shimkus was up to 85 on the mound with loose arm action and good feel for a short-breaking 71 mph slider as well as showing athleticism and clean arm action at SS. He has a smooth line drive swing at the plate, with good contact skills.

Jordan Smith  OF - 2012 - Eden Prairie, MN
Minnesota

A good athlete with strength, Smith ran a 6.95 and showed loose arm action from the outfield as well as power potential at the plate. He was up to 81 with his fastball and projects for more with his clean arm action and physicality.

Cody Brenner  SS - 2012 - Johnston, IA
Minnesota State

A very solid two-way player, Brenner ran a 6.75 sixty and showed some of the best MIF actions of the workout. He has a simple line drive swing with good contact skills at the plate and a simple delivery with good command of an 83 mph fastball on the mound.


2013 Top Prospects

Derek Burkamper  RHP - 2013 - Muscatine, IA
Nebraska

Burkamper looks to be the top 2013 arm in Iowa with his play with the Iowa Select team and his performance in the showcase. He sat at 89 with easy velocity and arm action, also throwing a 75 mph curve with two-plane break and an 81 mph changeup.

AJ Puk  LHP - 2013 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Florida

Puk keeps getting better every time he is seen by PG scouts. He has gained muscle and still has looseness and projection in his body. He was up to 87 with his fastball, with a 12/6 curveball and good feel for a changeup, and has a smooth left-handed swing with lots of power potential.

Josh Crosby  1B - 2013 - Iowa City, IA
Minnesota State

Crosby is a very strong underclassman and shows easy bat speed and power to all fields. He also has good arm strength behind the plate, up to 80 mph, and is a solid receiver with good blocking skills.
