Early Power Provides Cushion to Aces' 10-2 Win

6/10/2014

(Alec Dopp) - Two doubles, two walks, two errors, two passed balls, one single and one hit batter contributed to six first-inning runs for Team Avenue Aces Tuesday morning, providing the cushion necessary for both Aces pitchers to hold Team Citius-Turner to just two runs over five innings en route to Team Avenue's 10-2 victory at the 2014 15u Perfect Game-East Cobb invitational.

Austin Garofolo and Jack Hartman accounted for both doubles in the key bottom-of-the-first inning for Team Avenue, each of which were fly balls to left field. While it was the only base knock of the day for Garofolo -- who went 1-for-2 with two runs scored in the game -- while Hartman went on to produce another fly-ball single to left field later in the contest, finishing 2-for-2 at the dish with two runs scored, one walk and a pair of runs batted in.

Ethan Ness and Jeff Leach combined to hold Team Citius-Turner to three hits in 16 at-bats for the Aces, with fastballs ranging from 76-79 MPH and 72-74 MPH, respectively. Neither featured noteworthy stuff from a swing-and-miss standpoint, but Ness and Leach got ahead of batters efficiently enough early in counts (57.1% first-pitch strike rate) to induce weak contact later in plate appearances, with each of their seven total in-play outs coming off weak contact from Team Citius' hitters.

Toporek helps Pride to win

6/10/2014

The East Cobb Pride defeated the MyScoutDay-Best by a score of 6-3 behind the dominant relief performance from Aaron Toporek (2016, Walton HS, GA).  Toporek came in and threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 9.  He showed a smooth delivery on his 72-76/77 mph fastball and demonstrated the ability to pitch out of trouble.

Offensively for the Pride, Patrick Allen (2017, Etowah HS, GA) went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.  Garrett Cook (2017, Milton HS, GA) also had a nice day at the plate going 2-3 with 1 double.

Allen's Bat Provides Offense to Wildcats' Victory

6/10/2014

(Alec Dopp) - After going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in his team's tournament-opening loss Monday morning, Brandon Allen (2017, Woodland HS, GA) provided more than enough offense necessary for Sandy Plains Wildcats15u to capture a 7-2 victory over 212 Foundation Sports 15u early Tuesday morning at the 2014 15u Perfect Game-East Cobb invitational.

Allen, a 5-foot-10 outfielder/shortstop from Woodland, Ga., went 2-for-2 with two extra-base hits in the contest, scoring twice, walking once and driving in a total of three runs in his team's victory. Both of Allen's extra-base hits exposed the left-center gap with line-drive contact, with one going for a double and the other a three-bagger thanks in large part to his live bat with consistent gap power capable of producing runs in the middle of an order down the road.

Sandy Plains starting pitcher Jared Donald (2016, Kell HS, GA) compiled all seven innings on the mound in the game, punching out seven batters, walking two, allowing four hits (all singles) and two earned runs. Nine of his 13 in-play outs were generated on the ground, largely due to his 25 curveballs (68-69 MPH), and a fastball (75-78 MPH, 80 MPH max) which he threw for an impressive 74.2% strike rate.

Bizzle Sharp as Georgia Captures Walkoff Win

6/10/2014

(Alec Dopp) - Though the run scored by Jason Rooks (2017, Walton HS, GA) in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed Georgia Jackets 15u's victory over Team Elite Grey Tuesday morning at the 2014 15u Perfect Game-East Cobb invitational, it was the dominant performance by Georgia starter Weston Bizzle (2017, A. Crawford Mosley HS, GA) that produced the most noteworthy line of the day from a scouting perspective.

Bizzle, a 5-foot-10 right-handed starter from Lynn Haven, Fla., struck out 12 batters over his six innings of work, walking all but two batters on zero hits allowed and no earned runs. Working fast and attacking hitters with a bulldog mentality, the 2017 grad pounded the zone (67.3% strike rate), missed a healthy amount of bats (19.4% swinging strike rate) with 88.9% of the balls hit in play against him generating weak contact. His fastball (83-85 MPH) flashed modest movement, while he combined to throw his curveball (70-74 MPH) and changeup (74) for strikes at a 41.7% clip.

Steven Casey (2017, Hebron Christian Academy, GA) logged all 6.1 innings in the loss for Team Elite Grey, striking out five, conceding five hits (all singles), two walks and two earned runs. He too mixed speeds well (63-65 MPH curveball, 69-70 MPH changeup), throwing 15 of his 26 (57.6%) offspeed offerings for strikes, a big reason for why the majority of the balls hit in play against him produced less-than-ideal trajectories (66.7% weak contact rate).

Neither team tallied an extra-base knock in the contest, but Lawson Hill (2017, Kings Ridge Christian HS, GA), led both teams with two hits (2-for-3 in the game) for Georgia, while Peter Lynch (2017, North Gwinnett HS, GA) recorded Team Elite Grey's only hit (on infield ground ball) to go with one of his team's two total walks in the game.

Kyle Winters (Locust Grove, McDonough, GA 2017) was on the wrong side of the decision today as he took the loss. He lasted just three innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed four runs. Chaney Rogers (2017, Gordon Lee HS, GA) set a commanding tone early as Georgia Jackets' starting pitcher, logging three complete innings of one-hit baseball and one earned run. Though he recorded just two first-pitch strikes against 12 batters, the southpaw recovered to punch out four in those three innings of work, thanks in no small part to his ability to change speeds (80-83 MPH fastball, 70-73 MPH curveball, 72-74 MPH changeup) with outstanding, over-the-top arm action.

Javier Valdes (2016, John A. Ferguson HS, FL) stuck out the side (with a walk allowed) in his one inning of relief for Georgia, throwing 12 of his 19 fastballs (84-86 MPH) for strikes, and two of his four offspeed offerings (69 MPH curveball, 73 MPH changeup) for strikes.

Andrew Cash (2016, Flomaton HS, AL) went 1-for-2 with a fly ball triple to the left field gap, scoring a run while helping to drive one in.

Mission Team Baseball combined to go 3-for-18 in the game, with each of their six in-play outs coming on ground balls. Justin Barnett (2017, Archer HS, GA) recorded the lone extra-base hit for Mission, a fly ball double to center field. James Civelli (2017, Hebron Christian Academy HS, GA) recorded all four innings on the mound as his club's starting pitcher, but allowed seven earned runs to cross home with four walks and no strikeouts.
