Raleigh Regional

For the second year in a row NC State suffered a heart-breaking loss in Regional play, this time at the hands of Coastal Carolina. In a game that was suspended due to hard rain shortly after midnight local time, the game resumed on Tuesday as Coastal Carolina had the bases loaded with one out and G.K. Young at the plate down 5-3. Young, who provided the Chanticleers with their sole run in the first game on Monday against NC State with a solo home run (an 8-1 win by the Wolfpack), grounded out, which did bring a run home, but also put host NC State one out away from finishing the game and advancing to a date in Super Regional play.

That wasn’t meant to be, as after the next batter – pinch hitter Tyler Chadwick – was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases Seth Lancaster followed with a two-run single to give the Chanticleeers the lead. Billy Cooke, who went 3-for-5 in the game, added another run-scoring single to give Coastal Carolina a two-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

All-everything closer Mike Morrison was summoned to close out the game, which he did without allowing a baserunner, to record his 10th save of the year securing the 7-5 victory. Big South Pitcher of the Year Andrew Beckwith, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings, picked up the win to improve to 12-1.

Columbia Regional

South Carolina took the long way to do it but in the end they won their host Regional with a 10-5 win over UNC Wilimington on Tuesday. Alex Destino and Madison Stokes had the biggest days at the plate for the Gameocks, going 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI respectively. D.C. Arendas hit the game’s only home run, a solo shot to open the eighth and added an RBI bunt groundout earlier in the game.

Taylor Widener worked the first four innings for South Carolina, allowing just one run, with Josh Reagan working the next three frames. The team’s Friday and Saturday starters, Clarke Schmidt and Braden Webb, each worked an inning to close out the game.

Baton Rouge Regional

Things were looking a little dicey for LSU as Rice carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh and Willy Amador appeared to be dealing, having allowed only two base hits. Amador didn’t make it past the seventh inning as the Tigers struck for three runs, highlighted by a booming two-run bomb off the bat of Greg Deichmann. Mike Paierski added a solo shot to lead off the eighth and Kramer Robertson continued his postseason heroics with an RBI double that gave LSU a 5-2 win.

Jared Poche was called upon in the third inning and worked through the eighth, allowing just one base hit while striking out six. With the win Louisiana State will host Coastal Carolina next weekend in Baton Rouge.

Perfect Game/Rawlings Regional Player of the Week: Pete Alonso, Florida
As noted several times in the Regional recaps (linked above) Pete Alonso enjoyed a triumphant return to the starting lineup once again giving Florida a very dangerous bat in the middle of their lineup. He had three base hits and three RBI in the first and third games over the weekend, and a home run in each of the first two games. Overall he went 8-for-14 (.571) with six runs scored, eight driven in a double and two home runs.

Perfect Game/Rawlings Regional Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Johnson, South Carolina
In his first start of the season Tyler Johnson answered the call, and then some, as he went the distance in the Gamecocks' 10-1 victory over UNC Wilmington that forced a second game (as detailed above). Johnson allowed just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out 11. Prior to the start Johnson had appeared in 27 games, all out of the bullpen, and is second on the team in saves behind Josh Reagan with nine.
