13u Championship Recap: Day 3

Jordan Posway
Monday marked the third day of the PG Super25 13u National Championship in Fort Myers. The games are becoming increasingly more important as we draw closer to the championship. Here’s a quick synopsis of today’s events:

The Richmond Braves started off day three of the 13u National Championship with a bang. The Braves accrued thirteen run over four innings against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Joel Tarrh was a perfect 3-3 from the dish, finishing the game with three RBIs courtesy of two singles and a double. Will Bowles and Alex Greene dominated the game from the mound, allowing a single hit all game as the Braves torched the Pelicans 13-1. Things went from bad to worse for the Pelicans, as they squandered their second game of the day to the Indiana Bulldogs. Errors plagued the Pelicans in the first and sixth innings, contributing to a tough loss. Zachary McKenna, Cooper Thacker, and Christian Mojica recorded two RBIs each as the Bulldogs rocked the Pelicans 10-2.

The Dallas Mustangs simply could not keep up with the 643 DP Cougars-Sterling’s potent offense. Matthew Williams of the Cougars recorded a team-high three RBIs. Williams had a solid outing as the starting pitcher as well, going five innings with two earned runs. Peyton Moseley would close out the game in the sixth inning, securing the 13-2 victory. The Cougars wouldn’t rest for long, as they took the field against the Florida Burn Tampa just hours after their win. Jackson Phipps had one of the best pitching performances of the tournament so far as he struck out thirteen in seven scoreless innings on his way to a 5-0 win. Phipps received some run support from Alex Espinel who led the offensive charge with two RBIs on a perfect 3-3 day from the plate.

Jack Sutton’s game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the East Cobb Astros over the FBH Angels 7-6. Sutton was 1-3 from the plate, but he delivered when it mattered the most. Lucas Shannon and Christopher Rodriguez were excellent in the Angels’ defeat. Rodriguez fanned seven in four great innings, while Shannon absolutely crushed a ball in the second inning for the game’s lone home-run. The Angels bounced back against the Indiana Bulldogs thanks to a five-run third inning. Tyler Jacobs plated the majority of the runs in the fifth with a three-run double. Although the Angels recorded less hits, they made the most of their opportunities to best the Bulldogs 7-6.

Matthew Corpas was the hero in Team Select’s defensive battle against the GoWags Lumberkings. Corpas was unhittable on the mound for three innings, and he drove home the go-ahead run in Team Select’s 2-1 triumph. Although their team couldn’t pull off the win, the efforts of Scotty McManamon and Austin Hendrick did not go unnoticed. The two pitchers combined for six terrific innings, surrendering just two hits.

The SWFL Starz emphatically stormed past the Dynasty 13u courtesy of an explosive ten-run fifth inning. The Dynasty had just surged ahead the inning prior with three runs of their own, but fifth inning walks would be their downfall. With men on base, every hit by the Starz would prove costly. Unfortunately for the Dynasty, there were a lot of them. Moise McFaddin paved the way for the Starz with three RBIs in his team’s 11-3 comeback win. However, the Starz would start out slow in their second game of the day against the Giants Baseball Club. The Giants made consistent contact with the ball as they generated seven runs in the first three innings. The Starz eventually found their footing late in the game, but still trailed by one in the sixth inning. A timely two-run double by Chase Chatman reclaimed the lead as the Starz defeated the Giants 8-7.

The Tri-State Arsenal jumped out to a three run lead in the first inning, but they ran out of gas down the stretch as they fell to the SC Bulldogs 7-4. Gabriel Corley and Eli Martin were instrumental in the Bulldog’s fourth inning resurgence with a pair of RBI singles. To make matters worse, the Arsenal’s next opponent happened to be one of the hottest teams of the tournament so far. Georgia Team Combat made quick work of the Arsenal in a 12-5 rout. Team Combat jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning which set the tone for the rest of the game. Lukas Cook’s solo shot over the left-field fence highlighted a spectacular day for the winning team.

Team Rawlings PBF and the Diamond Jacks Super 13 combined for 27 hits during a six inning shoot-out on Field 6. The two teams were tied 7-7 after two innings, but Team Rawlings never let off the gas. The trio of Jake Dunagan, Hunter Conner, and Cash McNicholas combined for ten runs as Team Rawlings outlasted the Diamond Jacks 16-9. The Diamond Jacks continued to struggle in their next contest against Roadrunner Baseball. The Roadrunners dominated from the first pitch to the last pitch in an 8-0 shut-out victory. The Diamond Jacks could only manage two hits off of Evan Hurst who pitched all five innings and drove in a run on the offensive end.

Team Rawlings manufactured sixteen runs in their previous contest, but could not generate more than three against Cole Yoakum and Team Florida 2020. While Yoakum went to work on the opposing batters, Bennett Lee and Jackson Miller imposed their will at the plate. Lee tallied a team-high four RBIs, including a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Miller crushed a no-doubt homer in the same inning as Team Florida 2020 won 9-3. Although they cruised to victory against Team Rawlings, they struggled against the Legends Prospects. Team Florida used four pitchers in the contest, but none of them had an answer for the Prospect’s offense. Two RBI triples by John Mulready and Lucas Garcia powered the Prospects to an eight-run inning and the 13-6 win.

The Texas Express ousted the Florida Stealth-Red in eight innings due to a late five-run rally spearheaded by William “Ocho” Ibarra. Ibarra’s eighth inning RBI single broke the two-run stalemate and gave the Express the spark it so desperately needed. Nick Steiner, the winning pitcher, frustrated the Florida Stealth for seven innings with six strikeouts in his team’s 7-2 win. The Florida Stealth would have better luck against the SC Bulldogs. Jacob Lojewski hit a two-run double and pitched five scoreless innings in a great two-way performance as the Florida Stealth handled the Bulldogs 5-2.

After five high-scoring innings, the Central Jersey Warriors came up one run short in a 10-9 defeat at the hands of the Akadema Diamond Stars Titans. Ryan Gallagher, Jonathan Todd, and Kameron Evans combined for six of Akadema’s ten runs. The Warriors nearly pulled off an outstanding comeback from a four-run deficit in the top of the fifth, but Gallagher sealed the victory with his fourth strike-out of the game.
