Braves Win a Thriller 4-3

Jordan Posway
The 11U Perfect Game Super25 Super Qualifier championship pitted the two heavyweights against each other in the form of the East Cobb Braves and the Titans Baseball Blue. Both teams came into the championship game undefeated in the tournament. The game lived up to expectations as it was a hard fought battle up until the final out.

In the end, the East Cobb Braves walked out of Emerson with the 4-3 win, but the Titans Baseball Blue nearly pulled off an improbable comeback in the final inning after being held hitless for over four innings by #43 Tyler Presnell.

Titans Baseball Blue drew first blood in the top of the 1st inning as #9 Will Fincher tagged on a sacrifice fly by #44 Joshua Fitzpatrick to put the Titans up 1-0. However, the Braves quickly responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff double by #2 Marquis Grier got his team off to a strong start. His teammate, #7 Trey Sanders, followed suit with an RBI triple while an error by the opposing first baseman and an RBI groundout did the rest of the damage.

Excellent pitching by the Braves stymied the Titans’ bats for the majority of the game, and a pair of ground rule doubles in the bottom of the second added another run to their lead. Following the latest run by the Braves, Titans Baseball Blue played great defense to keep their deficit to just three runs going into the top of the 6th inning.

The magic number for both teams was three. Titans Baseball Blue needed three runs to tie up the game and the East Cobb Braves needed three outs to prevent that from happening. Things began to look up for the Titans as the first two batters reached base on an error and a single.  Once again, Joshua Fitzpatrick answered the bell with an RBI single to left field, his second RBI of the game. An RBI ground-out by #14 Trent Reddick cut the lead to just one run. However the comeback bid would end there as the Braves’ shortstop threw out the final batter at first base, securing a 4-3 Braves victory and a berth in the Perfect Game Super25 National Championship.

When asked about what impressed him the most about his team, East Cobb Braves’ coach mentioned how impressed he was by his team for “battling through adversity” and “working as a team together.” He used a previous game where the Braves found themselves down 3-0 and came back to win as an example of how his team overcame adversity in the tournament.

The 11U Perfect Game Super25 National Championship will take place July 16th through the 21st at the East Cobb Baseball Complex in Marietta, Georgia.
