Powell is a 6-4, 195 lb right handed pitcher from North Carolina with a good pitcher's body. He keeps his hands low during his delivery with a short arm arch in back and does a good job of hiding the ball from the hitters. Powell's fastball looked like it jumped on the hitter's a bit because of this deception. His velocity started at 79-80 mph but he worked his way up to a steady 82-83 after an inning with heavy sinking action. Powell's 72-74 mph slider had some sharpness to it and was a good pitch. We didn't see a change up but suspect that Powell has one he would use in a normal game. He has a good idea how to mix up his pitches and get outs and a change up would be an important part of this. Powell is a good pitcher who with a bit more velocity could have an impact at the college level. He is also a good student.
