Friday Recap: Shore goes distance in Gators win

Saturday Recap: Wright stuff tames Gators

The top four teams remain the same for another week, as the mighty Gators beat Vanderbilt at home to claim the series and push their overall record to a very impressive 43-9 mark. Even if they had lost their series this weekend they could have remained at the top given their overall dominance this season. Whether you want to look at their overall record, RPI, strength of schedule or whatever other method you use to evaluate teams, Florida remains on top across the board.

And it's also equally obvious that the next-best teams are almost near locks in Texas A&M (who fell one win, and a series sweep of South Carolina, short of 40 wins for the year), Mississippi State (who still has the most losses among the top eight teams), Miami and Louisville. Both the Hurricanes and the Cardinals reached the 40-win mark this past week with 5-0 and 4-0 performances respectively (with Louisville doing so in particularly impressive fashion, beating Vanderbilt in Nashville midweek before sweeping NC State at home).

This week there is no Pac-12 representative as Arizona lost their series to Arizona State and no other program had the resume to step in. Washington had a chance, if they had claimed their series, but they ended up losing the first two games over the weekend, at home, against in-state and Pac-12 rival Washington State before salvaging the third and final game. Arizona State was also considered after taking two of three from Arizona, but their conference mark and overall record (not to mention their resume) isn't as strong as the team they beat this weekend.

There also was nearly no Big Ten team as Michigan had a bad week and dropped out of the rankings. Even though Minnesota lost their weekend series a week ago to Indiana, and they swept Purdue, the worst team in the conference, it was time they had their opportunity to shine among the Top 25. They will have a difficult test next weekend as they host Ohio State, who were considered for inclusion after sweeping Michigan and taking a midweek contest against FAU.

Joining Minnesota in the Top 25 this week are Cal State Fullerton, who took two of three from UC Santa Barbara in their crucial Big West series, and Virginia, who are more than deserving as the defending champs of an aggressive re-introduction into the rankings, checking in at No. 14 after taking their weekend series against Georgia Tech, the fourth ACC series in a row they've claimed.

Fewer teams were considered because so many teams on the short list as being just on the outside also had rough weeks. While Louisiana-Lafayette won their series over South Alabama they lost their midweek contest. The same is true of Dallas Baptist, while a few other programs (East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Oregon State, UNC Greensboro, Michigan State, North Carolina and Creighton) all had disappointing weeks to varying degrees.
