No. 1 Florida 4, No. 7 Vanderbilt 2

The Florida Gators moved to 42-8 on the season and set a new school record for wins in a regular season with their come from behind victory over visiting Vanderbilt in a Southeastern Conference showdown in Gainesville on Friday night. The Gators, who are the top-ranked team in the Perfect Game Top 25, were able to scratch out a hard-fought victory thanks to some timely hitting and another steady performance from Logan Shore, who moved to a perfect 10-0 on the season.

Many of Shore’s exploits this season have detailed numerous times in these recaps since opening weekend so many readers will already will be quite familiar with his repertoire. The junior was his typical self on Friday night, although his fastball velocity may have been down just a tick as his heater sat in the 88-90 mph range for almost the entire evening. However, as usual he commanded the ball well to both sides of the plate and was able to pound the bottom part of the strike zone. Similarly, Shore was able to use his 78-81 mph changeup with supreme effectiveness to both lefthanded and righthanded hitters, and established the offering in the early innings.

Shore also used his 79-82 mph slider fairly often, which he has found apt to do moreso this season than in any prior year. On Friday it again flashed average potential, with most of the offerings being of the more fringe variety. Still, Shore has gained solid feel for the pitch and while the tilt is short and it can break early on occasion, he’s been able to locate it to both sides of the plate and keep hitters from cheating on his fastball/changeup combination.

The bottom of the Vanderbilt lineup came up with some hits in key situations, and the Commodores scored twice in the fifth inning to a take a 2-1 lead. Outside of that frame, in which a few balls were left up and out over the plate, Shore was rarely tested and there were only a few balls that were squared up off of the barrel (including a couple courtesy of Jeren Kendall and one from Bryan Reynolds).

As he’s done so often throughout his career and especially this season, Shore was able to regroup and get outs against a talented lineup. For a while it seemed certain that Coach Kevin O’Sullivan would have to go to his bullpen, but Shore’s final four innings were rather uneventful and when it was all said and done he finished with his third complete game of the 2016 season.

Toeing the rubber opposite Shore was Vanderbilt righty Jordan Sheffield. The redshirt sophomore has had a breakout campaign this year and he could be hearing his name called as early as the first round in just a few weeks’ time when the draft gets underway on June 9.
