There very well could have been as many scouts and decision makers in attendance as there were fans for the opening game between the fourth-ranked Commodores and the eighth-ranked Gamecocks. Part of the reason that the Vanderbilt faithful was rather thin was due to the impending tornado alerts along with hail and heavy rain in the forecast. On the other hand scouts were flocking to The Hawk on Thursday night to see first-round hopeful and Vanderbilt ace Jordan Sheffield, who turned in a start that will resonate in scout’s minds.

Coming off of a rough start at Missouri last weekend in which he walked five, Sheffield was absolutely electric Friday night and he was able to shut down a potent Gamecock offense for the better part of his seven innings. Though he did issue three walks in the game, the 6-foot, 195-pound, broad-shouldered Sheffield was consistently around the strike zone and more importantly threw any of his three pitches for strikes when called upon. What jumped out immediately though as Sheffield took his first couple of warmup pitches was the revamped mechanics in which he’s much shorter in getting to his balance point, nearly mirroring what former Commodore Carson Fulmer showed last spring with a quick, subtle step moving into his delivery.

Still showing some energy and an up-tempo to his delivery, the former Perfect Game All-American has done a nice job of not only smoothening out his mechanics, but lengthening his drive towards the plate which has resulted in better extension and sharper downhill plane. And while he has made some improvements to his delivery, which has resulted in better overall command, he hasn’t sacrificed any of his pure stuff and showed the same three-pitch mix that has him wholeheartedly in the first round discussion.
