Futures Collegiate Baseball League Top Prospect List (20)

Founded just a few of years ago in 2011 the Futures Collegiate Basebal League has opened plenty of eyes in their brief history, and this summer was no different as folks across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Connecticut continued to flock to the stadiums.

There were a number of strong team performances, with the Brockton Rox, Bristol Blues and Martha’s Vineyard Sharks all finishing the regular season at least 10 games over .500.

However, it was the Worcester Braves who made a late push and captured the Futures League title. Worcester, who finished the regular season 26-30, took two out of three over Bristol, with Zach Tower (UMass-Lowell) playing the role of hero by driving in two runs to break a tie game in the 10th inning of the decisive third game.

Also of note, last summer two incoming freshman stood out in Vanderbilt’s Will Toffey and Arkansas’ Luke Bonfield, and this summer two more youngsters similarly earned rave reviews and merit watching this spring in catcher Dominic DeRenzo (Oklahoma) and pitcher Tim Cate (UConn).

TOP 10 PROSPECTS

1. Ian Strom, of, Worcester (UMass-Lowell/JR in 2016)
League officials and coaches were no strangers to Strom’s exploits, as the outfielder had a very solid summer with the Worcester Bravehearts in 2014. After being named the circuit’s No. 8 overall prospect last summer, Strom returned and put up even better numbers in 2015. The athletic 6-foot-1, 180-pound outfielder was universally praised for his defense. He puts his plus speed to use well and he made a number of highlight reel level plays in center field this summer. He’s not a power threat by any means, but Strom showed the ability to hit the ball where it was pitched and find enough of the barrel to get on base consistently, hitting .353 and chipping in with 18 stolen bases.
