17u GCSQ Tournament Recap

Jordan Posway
It’s safe to say that the conditions for the 2016 Grads/17u Gulf Coast Super Qualifier were not ideal. Horrible weather swept the Gulf Coast, causing games to be delayed and venues to be changed daily. It’s a tiny miracle that they could finish the tournament. Although it was a stressful weekend in Baton Rouge, it was a great weekend for baseball.

Because of all the commotion, it was imperative to stay focused on the task at hand. Marucci Lemoine certainly did, as they weathered the storm to become the 17u Golf Coast Super Qualifier champions. However, it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the champs. Marucci Lemoine dropped their first game in pool play, but fortunately for them, that would be the only time they didn’t appear in the win column.

Their semi-final game against Marucci Raley was originally scheduled for 2:30, but heavy rain pushed the game back another two and half hours. However, it was well worth the wait as the two teams constantly battled for supremacy. Todd Gauthe starred in Marucci Lemoine’s 5-4 victory as he was responsible for all five RBIS, including the game-winning run in the 7th inning.

The championship game against Team Louisiana was more of the same, as the game was delayed nearly seven hours until 9:00 at night. While the late start time lulled parents to sleep, Ben Bayliss did the same to the opposing batters as he orchestrated a magnificent complete game shut-out. Marucci Lemoine’s ace recorded nine total strike outs while only giving up a meager two hits to the opposition en route to his team’s 5-0 championship win.

With Marucci Lemoine’s latest accomplishment, they now qualify for the PG Super25 17u National Championship scheduled for July 10-16 in Fort Myers, Florida, assuming the weather holds up.
