Ohio Valley Columbus Recap

Jordan Posway
The PG Super25 Ohio Valley Columbus Tournament in Carroll, Ohio featured 72 teams ranging from 14u to 17u. Brewing rivalries and stiff competition made this past weekend in Carroll a tournament to remember. Four teams were crowned champions of their respective age groups, however, only one of the four achieved their goal unscathed.

That one team was 14u West Hills Baseball of Oakdale, Pennsylvania. Their perfect 6-0 resume included a thriller in the championship game against the Cincy Flames. The contest went into extra innings as West Hills Baseball rallied to tie the score at seven in the 7th inning after previously trailing by three. West Hills Baseball took advantage of errors in their late surge, and they eventually pulled out the 9-7 championship victory in the 9th inning

The 15u Indiana Travelers faced more adversity than West Hills Baseball in their championship run. On Saturday, the Travelers dropped a crucial game to the Midwest Marlins. The Midwest Marlins handled the Travelers 14-6 on their way to the championship game. Unfortunately for the Marlins, the Travelers would earn another shot at their rivals. Matt Wolff and Jacob Thieman led the offensive charge for the Travelers with five RBIs combined as they avenged their previous loss 9-6 to become the 15u champions.

The Triple Crown Royals, champions of the 16u tournament, also had an early hiccup along their journey to the championship. Indiana Nitro 16u (Sprague) only managed to record a single win during the tournament, and it just so happened to be against the eventual 16u champs. After their 2-4 defeat, the Royals flipped a switch and responded with an unbelievable four game run. They managed to shut out the Brownlee Lookouts and Central Ohio Knights in back to back games while only allowing a single run to the Cincinnati Baseball Club Blackhawks (Meyer) on their way to the championship. The Royals did not skip a beat as they walked away from Carroll as 16u champs following their 10-2 victory over Locos Express.

Similar to the 15u Indiana Travelers, The 17u Indiana Nitro avenged an early loss in the championship game. The Ohio Sharks stymied the Nitro’s offense en route to a 4-1 victory on the second day of the four day tournament. Shortstop #7, Matthew Gorski, and #8 Noah Powell took it upon themselves to turn the tables in the championship by registering four RBIs apiece. The Nitro certainly made the most of their 13 hits in their 15-7 rematch over their tournament rivals.

With their championship victories, West Hills Baseball, Indiana Travelers, Triple Crown Royals, and Indiana Nitro earned the chance to participate in the PG Super25 National Championship in their respective age groups.
