No. 7 Florida 9, No. 12 Vanderbilt 7

The next first-round talent to see on my weekend excursion was Vanderbilt righthander
Walker Buehler, following up teammate Carson Fulmer Thursday and Missouri State’s Jon Harris on Friday. Listed at 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, Buehler may not be the most physical of pitchers considered for the first round but he doesn’t have to be as he’s able to produce premium stuff and hold it through the course of an outing. Looking more like a middle infield prospect, Buehler’s delivery is highly athletic with a loose and tension free arm action, one that may be the quickest among the arms eligible for the 2015 MLB Draft.

Coming out hot from the beginning, Buehler ramped his fastball up to 96 mph in the first and sat in the 93-95 mph range, something that would become commonplace over the next handful of innings. His outing got off to a shaky start after a one out walk and single up the middle before picking up his first strikeout of the game. With two outs, sophomore Buddy Reed was able to elevate an outer half 93 mph fastball and put it up into the wind, knocking the ball off the scoreboard in left field, putting the Gators ahead early in the content. Aside from the opening inning, Buehler was nearly flawless, scattering four additional hits while striking out another four.

Thanks to his athleticism and fast arm, Buehler did a nice job of maintaining his velocity, still touching 95’s in the fifth inning while showing the ability to work both sides of the plate. When he missed with his heater it wasn’t by much, showing the ability to get on top of the ball and generate solid downhill plane with short running life to his arm side. With a short arm action coming through the backside, another reason Buehler is able to generate such velocity is due in part to his incorporation of the lower half and how well he utilizes it to drive towards the plate.
