If you’re a Vanderbilt fan you’ve almost become used to the performance that junior ace Carson Fulmer put on display last night. If you’re just a college baseball fan, you’re more than glad you tuned in to watch Fulmer’s performance as he spun a gem and looked like he did nothing but solidify himself as a first rounder in the upcoming MLB Draft.

While several people bring up the effort in his delivery or the long-term profile, the Florida native does nothing but compete on the mound and last night actually got stronger as the game went on. Listed at 6-foot, 190-pounds, Fulmer does display effort in his delivery but nothing to the point that it inhibits his overall game, whether it be the pure stuff or his ability to repeat his delivery. He may rush through it from time to time and leave one up in the zone but that happens to pretty much every pitcher in the game. And as far as the overall offerings go, Fulmer never faltered on the mound as he settled in and began working both sides with his entire arsenal.

After beginning the game with a leadoff walk, Fulmer buckled down, allowing just one more free pass over his nine-inning masterpiece while scattering six hits. Out of the gate Fulmer came out pounding downhill with a 93-95 mph fastball, peaking at 96 to both sides of the strike zone, even on the walk, which had a couple of borderline pitches. Fulmer’s arm action is quick and compact through the back, something that he uses to his advantage to continuously fill up the strike zone, regardless the offering.

Fulmer’s fastball jumps on hitters and was able to miss bats on the strength of that pitch alone from the beginning to end, especially once he established his curveball and changeup. Despite long layoffs in between innings and a rising pitch count, Fulmer and his fastball remained steady throughout all nine frame, hardly ever dipping below 93 mph and still bumped 95 mph in the ninth, over 120 pitches in.
