Sometimes lefthanders just look better performing athletic movements than their righthanded counterparts, especially in swinging a baseball bat. It's smoother and seemingly requires less effort. John Olerud is the gold standard, with Shawn Green certainly a peer. Eric Hosmer might be a big league example right now, with Cleveland Indians prospect Brad Zimmer coming immediately to mind among top minor league prospects.

Mitchell Hansen is that type of lefthanded athlete. His swing is loose and tension free, with tons of bat speed that doesn't come from much visible effort.

The result for Hansen is that he is among the elite players in the 2015 draft class for his barrel-to-ball skills. He has maintained very high contact ratios at all major events he has been at over the past year, which is just about all of them considering he was a PG All-American and a starting outfielder on the USA 18u National Team. There is very little swing and miss in his approach, although there is patience, and the sight of Hansen lining a single up the middle or over the second baseman's head was a common result of an at-bat. He's been hitting over .500 most of the season this spring for Plano High School.

A challenge for scouts is how far to project Hansen's power as he moves forward with his baseball career. He obviously has the frame, leverage and bat speed to lift the ball, but that isn't in his present approach. He has only two home runs this spring.

Hansen is also a graceful athlete when it comes to his defensive tools and skills. He's a 6.6 runner and used to be a standout wide receiver and safety before giving up football to concentrate on baseball. He's thrown up to 93 mph from the outfield and has been a successful pitcher in high school as well. All signs point to him be a very good center fielder as a professional.

Hansen is a 4.0 student with a Stanford scholarship, so that's a factor that scouts will have to weigh heavily as the draft draws closer. He also is already 19 years old, meaning that should he chose to go to school he would be draft eligible again in two years.
