Spotlight: Matt Diorio
On
Sunday evening Watertown Rams catcher Matt Diorio became the second
player in the history of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
to hit for the cycle, joining former Watertown catcher Larry
Balkwill, who accomplished the same feat in 2011.
Diorio,
a native of Staten Island, N.Y., is coming off of his freshman season
for UCF where he hit .288 in 34 games, 27 of which were starts, for
the Golden Knights.
In
a 10-8 win over the Newark Pilots, Diorio got the two more difficult
hits out of the way first, blasting a two-run home run in the first
and recording his triple in the third. The double, the last of the
four hits to finish the historical accomplishment, came last.
“I
knew I was a double short and after I got the hit it didn't register
right away until I got to third when coach shook my hand and said
congratulations, then it hit me and it felt real good,” Diorio told
Justin Mattingly of the PGCBL.
