COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M sophomore right-handed pitcher Daniel Mengden could very well be on his way to being the next great ace for the Aggies, especially if he can consistently pitch like he did Friday night in a 2-1 win over LSU.

LSU, which entered Friday's contest hitting .310 as a team, had no answer for Mengden throughout the night. Tigers outfielder Raph Rhymes tattooed a 90 mph fastball for a double in the first inning, and he finished the night with two hits. Meanwhile, sensational freshman shortstop Alex Bregman smacked a pair of doubles off Mengden.

The rest of LSU's potent offensive lineup? Only one hit off the Aggies right-handed hurler.

"He was really good. He was down in the zone with the pitches he was throwing, and they would look like they were going to tail outside, but they'd stay on the plane for strikes," LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. "He had a really good slider and he stayed at the knees with his pitches. He was a great competitor and quite frankly, as good as I've seen in the SEC."
