Central Arizona Reclaims Top Spot,
While Other Clubs Jockey for Position

The 2013 junior-college season has been marked by significant upheaval with nine new teams cracking Perfect Game’s latest ranking of the nation’s top 25 teams—coming on the heels of eight new entries two weeks ago.

One thing remains constant in this unpredictable season, however, as Central Arizona College, which began the 2013 season at No. 1, has returned to the top spot. But even the Vaqueros have encountered their share of adversity as they lost three of their first four games in conference play while falling from No. 1, before winning 13 of their last 14 to recapture first place in the competitive Arizona Community College Athletic Conference standings. Overall, Central is 27-7.

The top three teams in PG’s latest rankings remain the same, though Central Arizona has replaced Texas’ Grayson County College (21-7) at the top. Grayson slips to No. 3 while Miami-Dade (27-5) continues its steady upward surge with a move from No. 3 to No. 2.

Meanwhile, upheaval is the order of the day elsewhere in the rankings with South Carolina’s Spartanburg Methodist College (20-10) and California’s Santa Ana College (16-7), ranked 4-5 in the previous ranking, falling out of the Top 25 altogether with 10 losses between them in their last 17 games. Texas’ Cisco College (25-6), ranked No. 6 two weeks ago, barely hung on to their national ranking at No. 24 after losing five times, including three of four to No. 3 Grayson County.

Oklahoma’s Connors State College (23-2) made the most-pronounced leap among ranked teams two weeks ago by improving from No. 19 to No. 9, while California’s Sierra College (18-3), now No. 10, and Kansas’ Cowley County College (21-4), at No. 14, made the biggest surge among teams that were previously unranked.
