All-Americans sign for $68M

2016 MLB Draft Pick/Signings Database | Phillies snag Moniak at No. 1

The deadline for signing players from the 2016 MLB Draft has come and gone, as players that were selected June 9-11 in the First Year Player Draft had until 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday to sign with their respective clubs. Of the 57 former PG All-Americans that were selected, 38 elected to begin their professional careers.

The collective total of the bonuses these former PG All-Americans signed for is quite staggering, as that total came to $68,847,300, and that doesn't include the bonus for 20th-round pick Clate Schmidt (Tigers), whose bonus information was not available. This includes the draft's No. 1 overall pick, Mickey Moniak, who signed with the Phillies for $6.1 million.

Of the 57 players taken, that's an average of over $1.2 million per player. Of the 38 players that signed, that's an average of over $1.8 million per player.

It went down to the last minute, or at least close to, but Braxton Garrett was the last of the former PG All-Americans to come to terms. He did so on Friday morning with the Marlins for the second largest bonus for a PG All-American ($4,145,900) and the fourth largest overall from the 2016 MLB Draft.

Jason Groome, who started the 2015 Classic for the East squad, came to terms on Thursday with the Boston Red Sox.

Fellow lefthanded pitcher Nick Lodolo, who pitched the eighth inning for the West in last year’s Classic, was the highest pick not to sign (41st overall, Pirates) and as a result he will honor his commitment to play for Texas Christian, one of the early favorites to open the 2016 season as Perfect Game’s No. 1 team. In fact, Lodolo was just one of two players (Tyler Buffett, 7th round, Astros) not to sign among those selected in the top 10 rounds.

Lodolo will be joined by Dion Henderson – who was selected by the Reds in the 27th round of the draft but opted not to sign – as part of the Horned Frogs prized 2016-17 recruiting class that includes undrafted 2015 PG All-American righthander Charles King. These three talented young arms will join 2011 PG All-American Mitchell Traver, the Reds 17th-round pick, on an already immensely talented TCU pitching staff. Traver opts to return to school for his senior year of eligibility after red-shirting as a true freshman.

All of the picks other than Schmidt that agreed to terms were taken in the top 10 rounds.

Since the game's inception in 2003, 180 PG All-Americans have been selected in the first round of the draft. One hundred and twenty five former PG All-Americans have played in the big leagues, which includes the 11 that were named to the recently completed 2016 Major League All-Star Game in San Diego, including the game MVP Eric Hosmer. Lucas Giolito (Nationals) and Brooks Pounders (Royals) are the two most recent to make their MLB debuts. That number will expand to 126 once Carson Fulmer, the eighth overall pick from the 2015 MLB Draft who was called up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday, makes his debut.
