Gainesville Super Regional

For the fifth time in seven years the Florida Gators will be playing in the College World Series. They clinched their ticket to Omaha in convincing fashion with a 7-0 win over in-state rival Florida State.

Florida designated hitter J.J. Shcwarz was the hero on this night, going 2-for-3 with a game-changing grand slam in the fifth inning and an RBI double in the sixth. Pete Alonso had another postseason home run, a no-doubt solo shot in the third, while he and Florida’s top two hitters – Dalton Guthrie and Buddy Reed – each scored two runs.

Starter A.J. Puk, the sixth overall pick in last week’s MLB Draft, last only 3 2/3 innings, as he didn’t allow any runs, and only one base hit, but he walked six batters which ran his pitch count up in a hurry. Although he didn’t walk as many, Seminoles starter Cole Sands also didn’t last very long as he struggled with command early, giving up two runs (only one was earned) while working around five hits and a pair of walks over 3 1/3.

Dane Dunning carried the Gators from Puk to light’s out closer Shaun Anderson in the ninth with 4 1/3 scoreless innings in which he allowed just four hits and no walks while fanning five Seminoles batters. Dunning, unlike the game’s two starters, was firing strikes immediately upon getting the call, doing a nice job mixing between his low- to mid-90s fastball and sharp breaking ball.

Anderson needed just 11 pitches in the ninth to close out the game and secure the win.

The Gators advance to Omaha as one of only three top 8 National seeds to make it (Miami, Texas Tech), and only one of four teams that advanced that hosted a Regional (TCU being the other team). Their win also ensures an SEC team will have a presence. While 2016 marks Florida’s 10th trip to the College World Series they have yet to win a championship.

Perfect Game/Rawlings Player of the Week: Tyler Neslony, Texas Tech
After losing their first game to East Carolina Texas Tech claimed the next two, including an 11-0 blowout in the third and deciding game that sends the Red Raiders back to Omaha for the second time in three years. Tyler Neslony made an impact in all three games, going 5-for-12 (.417) overall with five runs scored, six driven in, four doubles, a home run and a pair of walks. In the process Neslony, a senior outfielder, raised his batting average to .314 with 21 doubles, a triple and 10 home runs. His 32 extra-base hits and 58 RBI are tied for the team lead and he has yet to commit an error. Neslony was selected by the Braves in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Perfect Game/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week: Bobby Dalbec, Arizona
Bobby Dalbec got Arizona off to a fantastic start in their two-game sweep of Mississippi State, tossing 8 2/3 scoreless innings in the Wildcats 1-0 win over the Bulldogs on Friday. The win pushed Dalbec, who was used primarily as the team’s versatile closer during the regular season, to 10-4 on the year, as he allowed just five hits and wo walks with nine strikeouts. He also went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and a solo home run in Saturday’s 6-5 victory over Mississippi State that allowed Arizona to advance to the 2016 College World Series, their first appearance since winning it all in 2012. Dalbec was the Boston Red Sox’ fourth-round pick in the draft.
