Bryson Brigman – SS/2B

A couple of weeks ago I took in the San Diego/Arizona State midweek game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium expecting to see a battle of two high-level shortstops in Bryson Brigman and ASU’s Colby Woodmansee. The scuttlebutt going in had been that Brigman was solid but that Woodmansee had first-round potential. I came away from that game having been supremely impressed, but it was Brigman who left the impression.

The defensive actions are very good at shortstop, with excellent hands and feet with quick-twitch athleticism and range to both sides. There isn’t a question of if he has the actions or athleticism to play the shortstop position at the next level, rather, it’s his arm strength that may be a bit light to profile at the 6-spot. If he does have to move to second base, however, he could profile as a plus defender there.

Where he really blew the doors off was with his bat, though. With a quick, short stroke highlighted by above average bat speed and good leverage at contact, Brigman went 3-for-5 in that game with five lasers, peppering the ball to all fields with authority and solid carry up the gaps. He doesn't profile for much in the way of over-the-fence power, which does limit his profile a bit, but at maturity it could be an above average hit tool with plenty of extra-base pop.

With all that being said, the ultimate profile, while a good one, isn’t that of a first or second rounder. He’s probably a second baseman, and albeit a potential plus defender there, it’s still a second baseman and likely not a shortstop. And while he also may end up with an above average hit tool, able to deliver a lot of extra-base pop, it falls short of being much home run power. Regardless of the limitations, his is a Major League profile, one teams will be happy to grab in the 3-4 round range. (BS)
