15u Championship Game Recap

Jordan Posway
Hundreds of teams in the 15u age division aimed to conclude their season with a national championship title, but only the 643 DP Cougars Montgomery and Tri-State Arsenal had the opportunity to do so. After seven hard-fought innings, the Cougars realized their goal with a 10-1 championship victory over the Arsenal.

Fresh off of semifinal wins, the 643 DP Cougars and Tri-State Arsenal flooded Field 9 for one final battle. Tri-State Arsenal was riding high after their 3-2 walk-off win over the Michigan Elite, but the Cougars quickly brought them back down to earth with an explosive first inning. Josh Hudgins kicked off the Cougars’ five-run barrage with a bases-clearing triple to the center field gap.

The Cougars held Tri-State Arsenal’s potent offense scoreless until the fifth inning, largely due to Connor Stephens. The Cougars’ ace allowed one hit in his four-inning stint atop the mound. A wild pitch in the fifth inning provided the Arsenal with their only run of the game, however, they still trailed the Cougars by six runs.

Ben Harris and the Cougars added three more runs in the sixth inning for good measure. Harris spearheaded the late rally with a two-run single to left field. Josh Hudgins put the finishing touches on his team’s 10-1 championship win, retiring three straight batters in the bottom of the inning.

The 643 DP Cougars Montgomery barely sneaked into the championship bracket, but they made the most of their opportunity with three straight wins over some of the best teams the 15u age division had to offer. For his heroic, nine-strikeout performance in the Cougars’ semifinal win, Ben Harris took home the MVPitcher award. Chris Sabino of the Arsenal was named the MVP of the 15u tournament for his offensive display this week in Emerson. The Cougars navigated their way through a tough tournament and defended their home state of Georgia en route to becoming the undisputed 2015 PG Super25 15u National Champions!
