Cape Cod League Notes: July 3

We might still be roughly a year out from the 2016 MLB draft but pitchers have continued to separate themselves from the pack and form an upper tier even though June is a distant thought. One arm who looks like he’s more than capable of jumping into that group is Oregon lefthander Matt Krook. This isn’t an arm scouts have stumbled into while pitching for the Wareham Gateman and is far from that quite frankly as Krook was selected in the first round, 35th overall, coming out of high school by the Miami Marlins.

After throwing 45 1/3 innings for the Ducks during his freshman season and looking very much like a top-of-the-class type guy, Krook left midway through a start with tightness in his left arm during his freshman season. It was later revealed he would have to undergo Tommy John surgery, costing him the rest of his 2014 season and all of his sophomore year.

Beginning a comeback on the Cape isn’t necessarily an easy task but Krook has looked ready for the challenge over his two starts so far, with one of his most recent coming last Wednesday. A quick two-inning stint, Krook’s mechanics are understandably not at 100 percent, and while his command was a bit off he did show the potential for three at least above average offerings, each projecting well once he’s in the full swing of things.
