Joseph (Jay) Austin is a 2008 OF/P with a 6'1'', 180 lb. frame from Atlanta, GA who attends North Atlanta HS. He has a lean, greyhound type body and could trade spots physically with top 2008 prospect Aaron Hicks and few would notice the difference. Austin has outstanding running speed at 6.20 in the 60 and runs easily and effortlessly. Austin has huge range in centerfield and has more arm strength than he showed in drills. Offensively, Austin is still looking for his identity as hitter. He has fast twitch hands and some present strength but looks like he's thinking too much at the plate, especially about slapping the ball and running. Austin's speed is an impact tool but he's big and strong enough with enough raw bat speed to drive the ball and attack it aggressively instead of playing a little man's game like his East Cobb teammates Raymond Anderson and Jonathan Taylor. The tools are in there to develop into a high level hitter but they weren't on display in Cincinnati. Often overlooked in Austin's package is that he's a projectable left handed pitcher with a 90 mph fastball and a hammer 76 mph curveball, although he doesn't pitch frequently and is still raw mechanically. As an athlete, Austin has all the tools and could blossom quickly if he has the aptitude with the bat. Austin is a good student.

Joseph Austin is a 2008 OF/P with a 6'1'', 175 lb. frame from Atlanta GA, who attends North Atlanta HS. He has an excellent athletic body, with present strength and quickness and lots of projection. Austin was named to the showcase Top Prospect Team. Austin is a potential 5-tool type player who has done a nice job over the past year improving his skills. He's a 6.55 runner in the 60 with very good first step quickness and is an accomplished base stealer. Austin hits from the left side with high hands in his set up and excellent raw bat speed. He has lift and extension in his swing and projects lots of power in the future. The ball jumps off his bat with authority. Austin has the ability to make swing adjustments and still drive through the ball and hit it hard. Defensively, Austin has very good arm strength to go with his range. If his other tools weren't enough, Austin is also a left handed pitcher who throws 89 mph (touch 90 in the past) with a hammer curveball, although he is definitely a primary position prospect at this time. Austin is also very young for the 2008 class and won't turn 18 until he's out of high school. He's a high ceiling talent and could be a top level draft choice in 2008 if he keeps maturing. Austin is also a good student.

Joseph Austin is a 2008 OF/P from North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, GA, with a 6'0'', 173 lb. frame. Named to the Top Prospect Team at the event. Austin is a legitimate two-way prospect with advanced skills for his age. Defensively he has one of the strongest outfield arms in the 2008 class, and gets great online carry with accuracy as well. He glides to the ball and has very good range with instincts. At the plate he is a left handed hitter with quick hands. He stays very balanced throughout his swing and gets leverage at the point of contact. Austin has excellent bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat. Austin is currently a deep gap to gap hitter with projectable power. Not to be out done by his high level hitting potential, Austin is also very good on the mound. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with a loose and easy arm and good arm speed. Austin has a slow and deliberate delivery and stays online and balanced. He gets arm side run on his fastball that topped out at 85 mph, and he projects to throw harder in the future. Also mixes in a 74 mph curveball with depth, and he shows a feel for a 79 mph changeup. Austin has a lively body that is very projectable, and is a must follow. He is also a very good student.
