5/14/12: Most of the time when scouts see a 6-foot-2, 215-pound shortstop with 7.3 speed to go along with high level hitting and athletic tools, the first thing they think about defensively is a future third baseman. With Wyatt Mathisen, there’s no doubt that he could be a top level prospect at the hot corner, but he has made his mark with scouts with the projection of moving behind the plate to catcher as a professional. Mathisen plays shortstop and pitches for 31-1 Calallen High School, the No. 6 ranked team in the country according to the Perfect Game rankings. He would be on the short list for any 2012 National High School Player of the Year awards, as he’s 10-0, 1.08, 8 saves in 65 innings on the mound this spring and is hitting .453-3-38 at the plate with 14 doubles and 25 walks. Mathisen has also not made a single error in 97 totals chances in the field. But when he’s appeared at national level scouting events such as the 2012 Perfect Game World Showcase or the 2011 Area Code Games, Mathisen has worked strictly as a catcher and has given scouts enough to work off of that there is no doubt that he can adapt athletically to the position. He shifts very quickly and very easily to both sides and stays balanced extremely well. Mathisen’s balance and easy plus arm strength have enabled him to register game pop times as low as 1.94 and drill pop times down to 1.84 with above average accuracy and it’s easy to project that will improve with work on his release and exchange. Mathisen’s offensive potential makes his future full-time conversion to catcher even more interesting. He has a pronounced coil to load his hands and a big leg lift trigger as a timer but despite these complications has very consistent swing mechanics. Mathisen’s swing has some length but is loose and whippy with plus bat speed and nice lift and extension out front. He stays tall and balanced through contact and the ball comes off his barrel hard. While it’s more of a line drive swing plane now, one can definitely see the strength and bat speed for future home run production. Ironically, Mathisen throws almost as hard from behind the plate (85 mph) as he does from the mound. His sterling pitching record is a combination of a mid-80s fastball that will touch 87-88 mph to go along with a tight mid-70s curveball and pinpoint command (10 walks in 65 innings). Mathisen has signed with the University of Texas should he not go professional, although it’s not clear what position the Longhorns specifically have in mind for him.

Wyatt Mathisen is a 2012 C/MIF with a 6-2 215 lb. frame from Corpus Christi, TX who attends Calallen HS. Strong well proportioned athletic build. Right handed hitter, leg raise trigger, gets loaded and coiled, long loose swing with plus bat speed, whips it out front, good plane, easy hitting rhythm, good balance, ball jumps hard, plus power potential. Limited catching experience but plus tools, low flexible set, athletic actions, outstanding arm strength, accurate throws, 2.08 game on bag, 1.84 drills, will be 1.7's with more compact exchange. Does everything easily and athletically. High ceiling talent. Very good student. Signed with Texas.
