Jason Heyward is a 2007 OF/1B with a 6'4'', 220 lb. frame from McDonough GA, who attends Henry County HS. Heyward has a big league body right now, with tall, angular features and a very broad frame. Someone made a comparison to Ryan Howard at the Showcase and that seemed like a good comparison. Heyward is at the stage of development right now where he can flash is prodigious power and bat speed but most of his solid contact is in the form of hard line drive, some of which just happen to carry a long way. He has a level, line drive swing plane right now and really hasn't learned how to lift the ball consistently. That will come with time. Heyward's primary weakness at the plate now is a tendency to get out front and reach for balls. A continually surprising part of Heyward's game is his speed and baserunning ability. He didn't run the 60 at the Showcase but was 4.34 on a ground ball and stole bases at will, most of the time standing up. He's a very aggressive and very instinctual base runner. Heyward's enjoyment/enthusiasm on the field is obvious. He has the chance to be a very high draft pick next June.

Jason Heyward is a 2007 left hand hitting 1st baseman/outfielder from Henry County HS, residing in McDonough, GA. Heyward has a strong, athletic build on a 6'4" 220 lb. frame that is going to continue to get bigger and stronger. Just call it a Major League body. There are few players in the '07 high school class that have Heyward's upside. He was ranked #3 among PG National Top 100 position players and has a chance to be a very special player. Heyward steps to the plate and there is anticipation that he could do something big each time up; one of only a handful of players that provide that type of anticipation. His contact point is exceptional, with his body balanced and behind the ball, completely leveraged. His hands are lively and fast. Heyward has an easy swing and hits line drives with power. He is a patient hitter and seems to have excellent pitch recognition that is found in the very best hitting prospects. To suggest that Heyward could be a 40+ homer and .300+ hitter is certainly not out of the question... at the MLB level. As for his defensive tools, Heyward has near plus raw arm strength and an accurate arm, whether in the infield or outfield. His hands are good as are his feet. No matter what position he plays, his bat plays. It would seem that with his 4.20 home/1st time and 6.83 60 yard dash that he is a natural fit as a right fielder. Heyward is one of the players that is entering the spring season as a first round talent and will have to have a lot go wrong to not go that highly. He recently verbally committed to UCLA so it will remain to be seen how that plays into the equation.

Jason Heyward is a 2007 1B/OF/P from Henry County High School in McDonough, GA, with a 6'4'', 215 lb. frame. Named to the Top Prospect Team at the event. Heyward has a big league body, with some pro level tools. He put on a performance in Ft. Myers showing why he is one of the best, if not the best, in the 2007 class. At the plate he was more aggressive and he attacked the ball in batting practice and the showcase games. Heyward hit everything hard showing power to all fields, and making it look easy. Heyward has the ability to hit with big time power, and at the same time hit for a high average. He is listed as a primary first baseman, but his arm strength and athleticism in the outfield is impressive. Not only can he hit, hit with power, show arm strength, and field well in the outfield and first base, the big guy runs a sub 7.00 sixty. There isn't much he can't do, and he is a great kid as well. Tremendous upside to this young player. He will get huge draft interest next year.

Heyward is a very talented sophomore first baseman/left handed pitcher from Georgia. He’s only 15 but he’s probably getting tired of the Fred McGriff comparison’s already, because it’s unmistakable to any baseball person that that is who Heyward resembles. Heyward didn’t do much in batting practice but hit very well in the Showcase games, falling a home run away from the cycle and hitting the ball consistently hard. He has a long and smooth left handed swing and the ball jumps off his bat on contact. He projects big time power in the future. Heyward will tend to cut himself off out front and not swing through the ball at times, as if he’s tentative or worrying about mechanics. Heyward’s potential on the mound is also intriguing when you remember his age. He throws from a high ¾’s release point with a smooth arm action. The ball leaves his hand easily. Heyward’s fastball was 78-81 with some life and he threw a 68-71 mph curveball and a 65-68 mph change up and did a good job throwing strikes with all three pitches. Heyward is the type of pitcher and athlete that the next time you see him he might be throwing 85 mph and then you have to more seriously consider his mound future.

Jason Heyward -- Heyward is an extremely young freshman from Georgia whose birth date says that he could easily be in the 8th grade. He has an outstanding athletic body already at 6-0, 170 lbs, with easy actions and about as much projectability as you’re going to see on a 14 year old. Don’t be surprised when Heyward ends up at 6-4, 210. Heyward hits from the left side with a quiet approach and load. He generates good bat speed with wood and that bat speed is just going to get better. Heyward hits down and through the ball now and does an excellent job of making hard consistent contact. He had 3 hits during the games and was right on a couple of other balls. He will learn to loft the ball later; someone has done a great job of teaching him swing fundamentals to get started. Heyward is also a very good athlete who runs very well (4.4 down to first) and shows very agile footwork around the first base bag. He has a good arm for a freshman, too. There’s no reason physically that he couldn’t end up playing in the outfield and being an outstanding defender. We’d be surprised if Heyward doesn’t emerge as one of the elite hitting prospects in his class in a couple of years.
