COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Should the Alabama Crimson Tide stay exactly where it is in the Southeastern Conference standings the rest of the season, it would win the regular season title and, in part, have Ben Ashford to thank.
Who's Ben Ashford, you ask? Look down the Alabama baseball roster and you won't find Ben Ashford listed until the very bottom. Though he's not a player or on-field contributor, Ashford's role with the program is paramount. Ashford, of course, is in the midst of his first season as the strength and conditioning coach for the Tide baseball team after spending 18 months as an intern in the athletic department. Young or not, Ashford is making a difference.
Plenty of college baseball fans take the strength coach for granted, but for the Tide, Ashford has made quite an impact since taking over in August, transforming much of the Alabama offensive lineup into physical specimens, while also instituting workout regiments that promote more strength, and thus, more power in the batter's box.
The improvements are seen when perusing Alabama's offensive statistics from last season versus this spring, while Alabama's 22-10 overall record, along with an 8-4 league mark, indicates just how much things have changed since 2013.
