The fastest and the strongest

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Activities at the 13u and 18u PG BCS Finals got under way Thursday night with the annual Home Run Derby and Fastest Man competitions.

Brandon Gomez, a 2013 outfielder from Miami Lakes, Fla., who is at the 18u PG BCS Finals this week with the Hialeah Warriors, smacked three homers in the first round of the competition and made it stand up to win the 18u Home Run Derby. The Florida International signee bested first baseman Brandon Brosher from Spring Hill, Fla., a 2013 here this week with SCORE International. Brosher, an Oral Roberts signee, had two home runs in the first round.

Madison Skillings, an uncommitted 2013 outfielder with the West Cobb Cardinals out of Powder Springs, Ga., ran a blistering 6.39-second 60-yard dash to cop the 18u Fastest Man title. He was one of 16 participants in the competition that ran 6.9-seconds or faster.

John Malcom, a 2018 left-hander/outfielder with team Mizuno out of Detroit, hit a pair of home runs in the first round and broke a three-way tie with two more in the second round to win the 13u PG BCS Finals Home Run Derby title.

Nolan Wilson from the 6-4-3 DP Cougars, a 2017 third baseman from Atlanta, and Mason Denaburg, a 2018 right-hander from Merritt Island, Fla.,  who is here with the Central Florida Gators, also delivered two bombs in the competition's first round.

Gulf Coast Elite 2017 catcher Michael Carter ran a 6.82-second 60-yard dash to win the 13u Fastest Man title. Peyton Brown from the Cincy Flames, a 2018 outfielder out of Greyson, Tenn., ran a 6.94-second 60 and joined Carter as the only two of 49 competitors to break the 7-second mark.

Game action at the two PG BCS Finals tournaments got started on Friday and although early afternoon rain showers temporarily delayed some of the action, all of Friday's scheduled games were on track to be completed. Pool-play in both tournaments is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. at Terry Park, City of Palms Park, the Player Development 5-Plex, the Lee County Sports Complex and the jetBlue Player Development.

The playoffs in both events begin Tuesday with championship games scheduled for 11:30 a.m. (18u) and 2 p.m. (13u), respectively, on Wednesday at Hammond Stadium on the grounds of the Lee County Sports Complex.
