The phrase “safe college left-hander” has become a routine and entrenched part of the draft lexicon over the years. In a lot of ways, it’s perceived as a negative term by some simply because some fans look at taking a low risk college pitcher as a cop out of sorts. Let us not forget, however, why we refer to these pitchers as “safe.” Gonzaga’s Marco Gonzales is the very definition of a safe college left-hander, and that’s an extremely positive thing.

Gonzales is a two-way talent, but the realization came over the course of last summer that the 6-foot-1, 190-pound southpaw was absolutely destined for the mound as a professional. He was able to showcase his skills in the Cape Cod League for a brief stint, and pitched for Team USA as well. While he was a very well known commodity entering the summer, he really began opening eyes in his two starts on the Cape. It was a nice preview of things to come later in the summer.
