The Southern California Collegiate League continues to clamor for due recognition as a viable summer league, but national respect may not be fully forthcoming until a rival team or two steps up and consistently challenges the Palm Springs Power for league supremacy.

The appropriately-named Power has exacted its own power play by thoroughly dominating the SCCBL in its six-year existence, posting a 219-43 record overall in that period. If anything, the gap between the Power and its competition appears to be widening as it has gone 83-11 overall and 39-5 in league play the last two years alone, leading to consecutive league titles.

There were indications this summer that the SCCBL may become more than a one-team league going forward as the Long Beach Legends, for one, went a respectable 36-18 overall and 13-7 in league play, and even gave the Power a run for its money by consciously striving to field a prospect-oriented club somewhat along the lines of teams that the Power typically assemble.

Though the Power dominated the accompanying list of the SCCBL’s top prospects, with six of the top 10 and eight of the top 15 for the second straight season, the Legends contributed four prospects to the list and the team’s best prospect, righthander Josh Frye, seriously challenged Power righthander Matt Anderson for the honor of being ranked No. 1. Both Anderson and Frye, coincidentally, were teammates last spring at Long Beach State, but Anderson has since moved on as he elected to sign a free-agent contract with the Seattle Mariners following a dominant SCCBL season.
