2012 MLB Draft: Final Draft Order

For only the third time in the existence of the organization, the Houston Astros will pick first overall in the upcoming MLB Draft, to be conducted June 4-6.

Their previous two selections, Floyd Bannister in 1976 and Phil Nevin in 1992, both enjoyed productive careers at the Major League level, although neither spent much time in the Astros organization after both were traded early in their professional careers.

Reports indicate that the Astros are targeting pitching, likely at the college level, with Louisiana State's Kevin Gausman, San Francisco's Kyle Zimmer, Stanford's Mark Appel and Texas A&M's Michael Wacha being the most frequently mentioned names. Florida catcher Mike Zunino continues to make a case for the No. 1 overall pick as well as he builds from his promising sophomore year in which he was named the MVP of the SEC.

While the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) has already changed a lot to the logistics and overall structure of how draft picks are assigned, further changes to be implemented in 2013 will give the draft after this year a significantly different look.

Compensation picks for free agents will be drastically reduced, as only players that sign for a one-year contract equivalent of the top 125 players in the game will garner a compensatory selection. In addition, players must spend the entire season with the team they finished with the previous season to be eligible for compensation.

There will be new Competitive Balance Lottery in which six picks were be awarded to teams in a supplemental draft round following both rounds one and two. As part of this process, 10 teams with the lowest revenues from the previous season and 10 teams from the smallest markets will be given the opportunity to gain one of these extra picks.

An additional lottery process will be instituted should any teams forfeit their picks by not adhering to MLB's newly instituted draft pools.

Due to the institution of the draft pools, speculation continues to vary on how much it will affect this year's draft. Most seem to be in agreement that it is likely we will see more high school players attend college, at least initially until teams, players and advisors all get accustomed to the new rules and the long-term ramifications.

The draft pools will not restrict a team like the Astros from signing the first overall pick, as it has already been determined that they will have $7.2 million allotted to them to sign whoever they select.
