Coach Bob Natl Invite Week 2 Preview

Todd Gold
2012 Coach Bob National Invitational

Week two of the Coach Bob National Invitational heats up as the five divisions join the Open Section which has been underway for a week. Host Boulder Creek (AZ) will play in the National Division after going 5-1 in the Open Section, with a tough 4-3 loss in the National Game of the Week as the lone blemish.

National Division
Boulder Creek will be joined by West Salem (OR) who played well in an Open Section tuneup against a strong Valley Vista (AZ) opponent, before falling short in extra innings on their opponents' home field, it was just the second game of the season for West Salem. Chaparral (CO) and Lake Oswego (OR) round out Pool A of the National Division, Chaparral dropped a close one in their season opener to perennial powerhouse Rocky Mountain at Coors Field, while Lake Oswego will open their season at Coach Bob. Boulder Creek boasts the top pitching prospect in the state of Arizona, in Arizona State commit Tony Blanford. Lake Oswego is off to a 4-0 start to the season, a strong opening that was punctuated by a 4-0 win over nationally ranked defending Oregon 6A champions Westview.

Pool B of the National Division includes defending Colorado 5A state champion Regis Jesuit is joined by fellow 2011 Colorado 5A playoff qualifier Columbine. The Colorado representatives will be joined by host O'Connor (AZ) and Sheldon (OR). Sheldon features an interesting prospect in 2013 LHP Brett Nielsen, who will start the opener against Regis on Monday. Regis is a young team features several interesting prospects, including 2012 RHP Peter Bayer, 2013 SS Brody Weiss and 2014 LHP David Peterson. O'Connor is a strong club in spite of its youth, and 2014 SS Greg Saenz caught the eye of PG scouts last week during the Open Section, while 2012 3B Brendon Erickson provides senior leadership and offensive production. Columbine has several players who have committed to play at the next level and we look forward to getting our first look at them.

American Division
Pool C of the American Division is hosted by North Canyon (AZ) and Valley Vista (AZ). Valley Vista went 4-1 last week in the Open Section, and are led by an interesting prospect in 2012 SS Caleb Wood, while also boasting Missorui bound 2012 RHP Matt Garringer. Arizona sends an out of town representative to Pool D as Prescott travels about 100 miles southeast to compete at the Coach Bob National Invitational. Clackamas (OR) comes into the tournament at 2-0 on the season, having won their opening games by a combined score of 28-5.

Other players that we have received positive reports on and are looking forward to seeing in the American Division include: Pine Creek (CO) 2012 RHP Ryan Warner, ThunderRidge (CO) 2014 SS Brody Westmoreland, Churchill (OR) 2012 LHP Jake Lessel and Prescott (AZ) 2013 OF Brady Mengarelli. Ponderosa (CO) 2012 3B Andrew Paust is 6-for-10 with a pair of Home Runs in the Mustangs' first three games of the season and has pitched well on the mound.

AAA/AA/A/Open Divisions
La Jolla Country Day (CA) features 2012 C Sam Ayala, a UC-Santa Barbara commit and several other talented players who we have seen in the past. Sandy (OR) 2012 SS Kendall Main, Heritage (CO) 2012 C Kyle Calhoun, Fairview (CO) 2012 1B Rocco DeSantis, Sheldon (OR) 2013 OF/LHP Mike Ralston and Dakota Ridge (CO) 2012 RHP Steven Wilson are other players to watch heading into the tournament.
