48 teams ready for WWBA Florida Qualifier

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A total of 48 teams will begin play Friday (Sept. 18) in the WWBA Florida Qualifier in Fort Myers, with all of the teams chasing an automatic spot in the WWBA World Championship that will be held in Jupiter, Fla., on Oct. 22-26.

Forty-six of the 48 teams in this weekend's tournament by Perfect Game USA are from Florida. They will be joined by the St. Louis Dugout (from Missouri) and the US Baseball Stars (from Michigan). The opening games are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, with the championship game scheduled for Monday at 11:30 a.m.

The tournament will be held on 14 fields in Fort Myers, including the Boston Red Sox Player Development 5-Plex and three fields at the Lee County Sports Complex (a training complex used by the Minnesota Twins). The tournament also will use two fields at the City of Palms Park, Cypress Lake High School, Dunbar High School, Riverdale High School and South High School.

The Florida Legends won the 2008 Florida Qualifier. That earned the Legends a spot in the WWBA World Championship, which is Perfect Game’s biggest scouting attraction of the year.

The 48 teams have been divided into 12 pools. The 12 pool champs and four Wild Cards will advance to the playoffs, which are scheduled to start on Sunday at 9 a.m. The semifinals will be played Monday morning, followed by the championship game on the Stadium Field at the City of Palms Park.
