Oregon State 3, Southern California 1

Travis Eckert carried a perfect game two outs into the seventh inning before finally giving up a base hit, a flare that dropped into the Bermuda Triangle in shallow right-center. He ended up going the distance, allowing just two hits, in a 3-1 victory over USC. Eckert faced one over the minimum, inducing a 4-6-3 double play to end the game, and walked only one.

The Beavers scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning on three consecutive run-scoring hits from Trever Morrison, Cadyn Grenier and Christian Donahue.

While Eckert wasn’t overwhelming with a lively 91-93 mph fastball, a low-80s breaking ball and a 79-85 mph changeup, he executed the game plan well and did a nice job changing speeds to keep the Trojan hitters off balance. He exhibited very good command as he didn’t walk any batters while also showing the ability to throw any pitch in any count to any hitter, including changeups to righthanded hitters and breaking balls for both called strikes and as chase pitches down and away.

The athletic 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior has good balance in his delivery and gets very good extension on his pitches, allowing his stuff to play up a notch. Eckert didn’t give in and consistently missed barrels and his fastball has good life to his arm side. The changeup is a pitch he clearly is very comfortable with and may be his single best offering, throwing the pitch early and often.
