Boston College 5, No. 23 Virginia 4

After playing a couple of close games both Friday and Saturday, the Virginia Cavaliers and Boston College Eagles needed 13 innings to not only decide a victor, but who ultimately took the series and another pivotal game in the ever challenging ACC. Finding themselves down by three in the bottom of the tenth with two strikes and two outs, Boston College junior outfielder Michael Strem (who was 3-for-6 on the day) came through with a clutch bases clearing double, allowing the Eagles to ultimately walk off in the 13th with an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Scott Brahan.

Prior to the weekend series Boston College Head Coach Mike Gambino announced a shuffling in his weekend rotation, one that would slot junior righthander Mike King in the Sunday role. Excellent to this point in the year this was certainly no type of “demotion” so to speak, but rather a switch that would help the Eagles contend in Sunday contests with the possibility of taking the series. Today’s victory served as a perfect example.

Listed at 6-foot-3, 204-pounds, King rounded out what proved to be a fantastic trio of starters this weekend for Boston College following the efforts of Jacob Stevens and Justin Dunn, and though he didn’t factor into the final decision he provided seven innings of one-run ball. With the seven strong innings King lowered his ERA to 2.52 on the year and frequently made his pitch in critical points of the ball game to thwart the Virginia attack and limit the damage to a single run in the fourth.
