Spring League Week 3 Wrap Up

Steve James
Before I get into the week 3 recap of the Iowa Spring League, I have to give a shout out to the players, coaches, and parents who braved the elements on Saturday.  Temperatures were in the mid to upper 30's with gusts of wind upwards of 40 MPH making it very cold and difficult for players to perform at their best.  Through it all there were some good performances in difficult conditions.  Sunday turned out to be a much needed break from cold temps and provided a much better backdrop for some quality baseball that was played.  Here are the highlights from week 3.

Top Pitching Performances

Judkins first outing of the season

Sunday was the first outing of the spring season for Grant Judkins (2016 - Pella HS).  He looked crisp with his fastball pitching at 86-89 MPH with his fastball with his usual loose quick arm action.  He threw a lot of strikes and showed some feel for his breaking ball.  Judkins also swung the bat well collecting 3 hits in 6 OAB's this weekend.  He showed his smooth left handed swing and barreled the ball up well.

Spencer Van Scoyoc's pitching performance
Spencer Van Scoyoc (2016 - Jefferson HS) had a quality performance of his own on Sunday.  He pitched at 86-88 MPH with his fastball and located his hammer curveball at 71-73 MPH.  Van Scoyoc utilized that two pitch mix well allowing just 1 hit in his 3 innings of work.  He also struck out 7 while walking only 1.  His pitchability and feel of his breaking ball have been good so far this spring, while his command on consistency have gotten better.  It was another quality outing for Van Scoyoc.

Winn with quality outing
Keaton Winn (2016 - Pekin HS) looked very good early in his outing Sunday for the Navy Seals.  He pitched at 87-89 MPH early and showed some bite on his curveball.  Winn has put on some good weight this off-season and it shows in his performance thus far.  He struck out 7 in his 3 innings of work with just 1 walk.

Connor Van Scoyoc dominant
Connor Van Scoyoc (2018 - Jefferson HS) was dominant in his 3 innings of work allowing no hits with 5 strikeouts.  He pitched at 84-87 MPH with his fastball and threw his curveball for strikes.  He located his fastball well and showed good bite on his curveball.
