Perfect Game Junior College Top 25: March 15

As we end the month of March and sprint towards April, things at the JUCO level are really starting to get interesting. The defending National Champion Northwest Florida State Raiders have yet to win a conference game and have opened the gate for a new team to spring into the top spot. This isn’t any ordinary team, as even at this point in the season they have yet to lose a game.

The LSU-Eunice Bengals have forced their way into the pole position with their ridiculous 32-0 record. Coach Jeff Willis is always mentioned as one of the best at what he does and this year is no exception. Even with some key injuries early on, Coach Willis has kept his team focused and loose while letting the players do their thing on the field. The pitching has held up during the absence of No. 2 starter Braxton Smith and the ability of the Bengals lineup to put consistent pressure on opposing defenses has proved to be key as well.

The Northwest Florida State Raiders were 24-6 heading into the start of their conference schedule and have since gone 0-4, albeit against some very strong competition. Life in the panhandle of Florida isn’t an easy one and it’s shaping up to be a very interesting run to the finish in that region. The slow start in conference play has dropped Coach Martin’s squad down to fourth, but the ingredients are there to turn things around in a hurry.

The second and third spots are unchanged from two weeks ago. San Jacinto (22-6) has been holding things down in the two hole all year and are still one of the most dangerous teams in the country. If not for LSU-Eunice’s unblemished start, they would be No. 1 right now. Third ranked Central Arizona (31-5) has shown no signs of slowing things down in the desert. The Vaqueros have answered the bell all season and have put up a 13-3 record in conference play.

Rounding out the Top 5 are the Santa Fe Saints. This team continues to surge and finds themselves sitting 28-4 overall and 9-1 in their conference. Head Coach Johnny Wiggs has always done an outstanding job in Gainesville and less than two weeks ago he reached the 500 win milestone.

Right on Santa Fe’s heels is St. Johns River (Fla.). The Vikings (30-6) have played great baseball all season and show no signs of slowing down. Andy Toelken has been great on the mound. He’s thrown 60 innings in his 10 starts while striking out 61 and walking only seven. The versatile Pearson McMahan has dominated for them out of the ‘pen and as a starter while posting a filthy 12.86 strikeout per nine innings rate, and closer Tyler Carr has been as reliable as they come in the late innings.

Kansas and Oklahoma are home to the two new additions to the updated rankings with Connors State (24-3) in Oklahoma and Neosho County (25-4) representing Kansas. Those two teams replace Tallahassee and Johnson County who are both still very solid squads, but have hit a bit of a bump inside their conferences.

With just about two months left in the season there is still plenty of time for a handful of teams to really pull away from the field as the postseason approaches, and for some other  teams to right the ship and start peaking in time for the run to Grand Junction in May.

Rankings are based on games through Sunday, March 27

Others considered: Weatherford (Texas), Dodge City (Kan.), Wabash Valley (Ill.), Navarro (Texas), Southern Nevada, Western Nevada.
