15u Championship Recap: Day 1

Jordan Posway
National Championship season is officially on the home stretch as the 15u tournament kicked off Thursday in Emerson, Georgia. Here is a brief synopsis from the first day of pool play:

Austin Beyers and Zachary Ottinger teamed up for a no-hitter in the East Cobb Braves’ 8-0 shutout of the Adirondack Heat. However, the Braves would lose a heartbreaker in their following game against the Cincinnati Spikes. The Braves nearly rallied back from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth, but Jared Poland was able to quell the Braves’ comeback bid to secure the 6-5 win.

The Columbia Angels got off to a great start with a 6-3 triumph over the Sharks Elite. The Sharks simply could not keep up with Andrew Rash and the Angels’ offense. Rash had a flawless 3-3 day from the dish, including an RBI triple in the seventh inning.

Team NC Demarini got off to a slow start against 9 Stars Baseball, but they finished strong with five runs in the final three innings. Caleb Cozart struck out six and limited 9 Stars’ offense to just two runs. Team NC claimed the lead after a wild pitch and held on for the 5-2 win.

In their following match-up versus the 643 DP Cougars Montgomery, Team NC Demarini did not fare as well. Team NC never recovered after a three-run first inning by the Cougars, consisting of a costly error and an RBI single by Hunter Reaid. The Cougars fended off a late rally to secure the 4-3 victory.

The Chattanooga Mustangs survived a low-scoring affair against the Ironmen Baseball Club 3-2 on Field 9. Blake Bryan kept the Ironmen offense at bay, allowing one hit and zero earned runs over three innings.

The Northwest Bandits Black edged the Norfolk Destroyers Elite in a tight seven-inning contest. Ryan Long was absolutely brilliant on the mound as he tossed a complete game two-hitter with seven K’s. Ben Steck’s two-run single in the seventh inning sealed the Bandits’ 3-0 shutout victory.

The Destroyers came up empty against the Tennessee Knights as well. They had no answer for Tyler Polk, who launched a three-run homer over the left field fence in the top of the third. Polk would add another RBI in the seventh inning as the Knights dismantled the Destroyers 7-0.

Scott Jones contributed three hits in Marucci Forbes’ 8-5 triumph over the Blacksox Elite. Jones recorded a single in the first, second, and seventh innings.

Tyler Ras and Chris Sabino were phenomenal in Tri-State Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over the Georgia Seminoles. The duo teamed up for six strikeouts and zero earned runs over seven innings.

The Seminoles were outdueled by Rockets Baseball as well. Cody Coffey was nearly unhittable in his three innings on the mound. Clark Derrick went 2-2 from the plate and tallied three RBIs as the Rockets stormed past the Seminoles 13-4.
