17u Championship Recap: Day 2

Jordan Posway
All twenty teams looked to improve upon their pool standings in hopes of advancing to the championship bracket on day two of the PG Super25 17u National Championship. A bevy of talented pitchers led their squads to crucial victories. Here’s a brief summary of Monday’s pool play action from Fort Myers:

The CAPS Stars benefitted from a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single by Nick O’Day in their 3-0 drubbing of FTB Sarasota. Dalton Heath and Zachary DeAntonio thwarted FTB’s offense for seven innings and notched two strikeouts apiece.

The Austin Banditos-Salazar continued to look sharp as they trumped PBA Under Armour in seven innings. The Banditos never relinquished the lead after Grant Gilmore’s two-run shot over the left field fence. Steven Rowland fanned ten PBA Batters as the Banditos rolled to a 5-1 win. The Banditos bolstered their impressive resume with a shutout of the Saw Savages for their second win of the day. Aaron Cardona tossed a complete game one-hitter and tallied five strikeouts in the 9-0 rout.

The Ohio Surge overwhelmed the East Cobb Astros 9-1. The Astros could only manage three hits against Mark Rader, who hindered their offense for all six innings. Danny Blade finished 4-4 from the dish with three singles and a triple.

The East Cobb Braves put runs on the board early and held on for the 4-2 win over Nokona Baseball. An RBI single by Ben Brock and an RBI triple by Alex Nuovo got the ball rolling for the Braves’ offense. However, an 11-3 whipping at the hands of the Pro Motions Patriots brought the Braves back down to earth. Gerard Dephillips kept the Braves’ offense in check while his team lit up the scoreboard.

SBO Florida notched six runs in the opening two innings of their 11-3 thrashing of Team Wilson-Red. After their early outburst, the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Jorge Datil and Alexander Jimenez combined for three RBIs on four hits.

Marucci Raley’s Breonn Pooler and the Ninth Inning Royals’ Andy Wilson had quite a pitcher’s duel, but Pooler’s squad would come out on top 3-1. Mason Templet and Andrew Cooley gave Marucci’s ace plenty of run support with an RBI double and an RBI single respectively.

The Cangelosi Blacksox outhit their opponent ten hits to five, but they left many baserunners stranded in their defeat at the hands of Marucci-Lemoine. A trio of timely singles by Emile Lege, Evan Daigle, and Cain Castille powered Marucci past the Blacksox 4-3.

Lenny Webster’s Catch42 rode a monstrous seven-run first inning to victory over the Orlando Assault. Lenny Webster’s team never trailed after Rodregas Jenkins’ two-run single in the top of the first. Jeff Sweat lead the team with three RBIs as Catch42 walloped the Orlando Assault 10-7. Catch42 drew even with the Sportika Sox in their final game of the day. Sean Downey led the Sox to a 3-0 advantage, but Catch42 responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to equalize the score.

Zach Maize and CBA 17u Team DTB blanked Team Wilson-Red 3-0 in seven innings. Maize pitched the entirety of the game and struck out five Team Wilson batters. CBA never trailed after Brock Girling’s second inning RBI single.
